The premise is unique: Cerise is a female dominatrix, not a common protagonist in many stories, and her Mistress Cherry nom de whip is just so utterly ridiculous and pun inspired that you know there will be plenty of humor in the story. And Mina Vaughn does not disappoint on the humor front. Yes, there is sex - and plenty of it, but more than that, this story actually is personality driven as we are given more clues into Cerise's difficult nature, and Willam's desire for companionship and love.
Cerise was difficult to empathize with at first, until the cracks in her armor started to show up. And the first of those cracks came early: her need to have everything just `so' in each of her encounters, and her lack of patience with those who do not meet her often ridiculous standards all show a woman grasping for control, afraid to take chances. Further on in the story, her reasons start to become clear, if it does feel she is overreacting, but give the girl a chance: we've all been scared of change and different at some point in our lives.
William is different: a vampire with a need to have someone to call his own and share his life with, and deep down he also has his own feelings of inadequacy and guilt to deal with. As the two navigate and negotiate their relationship and roles, this quickly turns into a sweetly told story of acceptance and support that comes with love. From superbly steamy sex scenes, to the lifestyle parties: sexuality is always a few flavors from vanilla and with the addition of some humorous narration, a step away from voyeuristic. Best of all, both William and Cerise learn, grow and compromise on their way to a happily after forever.
I received a galley copy from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.
"Mistress Cherry" is a Domme. Demanding, detail-oriented, perfection seeking Domme with high standards. Unfortunatelly, she cannot find the right sub to fullfil her requirements. But than she meets William who seems to be perfect at everything. Even though he seems to be ideal submissive, there is something strange about him. And when lines between Domme and sub start to blur, things get very interesting...
Topic in this book was refreshing, original and different from my usual reads. I loved that. Role-plays and talking, everything was sensual and extremely sexy. I really enjoyed reading this book. Plot was well-balanced with steamy parts and together it created very entertaining read. Congratulations to Mina Vaughn to this amazing debut novel!
Cerise is one independant and sexy woman. She knows what she wants and she wouldn't be satisfied with anything less. She is smart, likes challenges but there is this baggage from her past that unables her to be truly happy.
William was fascinating character. Tantalizing, artistic, charismatic and smooth talker. He would have done anything to please Cerise and to get into her good graces. Ideal man, right? Or is he not?
This was my first Domme book and I was really impressed with this debut novel. It was smartly written, never boring and I devoured it in one sitting. The only thing that bothered me was how easily Cerise accepted all those William's secrets. But it never ruined my reading experience. Definitely keep an eye on this book!
First and foremost, you need to go into this book expecting a humorous story. I wouldn't say that the story is tongue-in-cheek per se, but the author definitely approaches the story of Cerise and William with huge amounts of humor and sarcasm.
Cerise is a domme, but she's not a domme really interested in the painful aspect of BDSM. No, she's a domme who get's off on being in complete control...to the point of being OCD. Lately she's been flying through subs because none of them can live up to her high standards of what she wants from a scene. As a result, the book opens with her participating in a speed dating type scenario for BDSM.
At this speed dating event is William. He's a vampire and that's seriously hurting his ability to submit. Between the cold of his skin and the fact that it takes a LOT more to restrain or hurt him, most dommes do not want to take him on. What Cerise doesn't realize at first is that he is actually a vampire.
This book was light and entertaining. I need to take this kind of humor in my reading in small doses, but I read it over a family weekend trip so it worked perfectly. I will say I wished it was a tiny bit shorter. I think the conflict became too drawn out and the entire book would have been more satisfying if it had ended at about the 80% mark. But regardless of this, I enjoyed reading it. The mental quips from Cerise kept me grinning and the entire set up of the story was very humorous and fun. It was nice to read it for something a bit different.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.
