Marcus and Liz face different pressures, but both will do anything to achieve their opposing goals. Liz's situation illustrates the disparity between class and gender. She and Marcus are drawn together despite these and not just physically. Liz shows grit and integrity in fighting a manipulative powerful man for her sister's freedom. Also fascinating intro to her sister's story, which I'm compelled to read.
My cynical side is wowed. I expected another book that was all sex, little substance. Grateful for this wonderful amalgamation of sensuality, romance and interesting plotline.
We first meet our heroine Liz. She’s had an unfortunate 2 years. Her father has been murdered at the hands of her sister. Her sister sits in Newgate awaiting trial. Amanda is starving and falling apart. It’s a race against time.
Liz is tasked by a traitor Lord for her sisters release to obtain information, specially a letter. He works for the French, he’s a traitor, but If returned, her sister shall be released.
So we’re off with Liz as she goes undercover as a chambermaid at the Dukes household. Marcus as we meet him, is intense and works for the Crown himself in the opposite way of uncovering spies, Lords specifically with a group of other high ranking lords who we meet later on in the book.
There’s an immediate attraction between the two. Secrets and lies intermingled with attraction. I actually enjoyed every minute of their unconventional attraction and found the romance to be not only believable but torturous for the Duke. He’s a good man, he doesn’t dally with the help and falling for his maid......not done.
It’s a good start to the series. I like who we’ve met and I’m looking forward to Amanda’s story.
Elizabeth finds herself alone and struggling to get her sister set free from Newgate and suddenly financially desperate with the death of her father she is lured in by the Earl of Westmore who promises her that he hs a judge who is freindly and can get her sister released but the Earl keeps dangling that carrot for yet one More despiclple so called errand , steal this, get that , secure information and now he wants her to pretend to be a chambermaid for a Duke no less and steal a letter from him.
To spite trying to void this latest despicable assignment fear of Westmore allowing her sister to go to the hangman's noose sets Elizabeth on the path to stealing from the Duke. Elizabeth however will find her determination tested when she meets the iriisistble , sexy Duke that arouses feeling in her she hs never experienced. The Duke of Montague has a firm rule no taking advantage of the people who work under him, including his maids , however his newest maid arouses desires , he wishes to see her submit to him, to own her, to dominate her unusual for him since he is always in control of his desires and when he indulges he does so with widows who are willing or pays for the priv, age with professionals.
These two temp each other , so who is to blame him when he finally caves no breaks his own rule, how can a man resist exploring Elizabeth submissive nature .
While Liz is hiding her search for the letter with the purple seal and dallying with the Duke , The Duke is searching for the traitor to the crown and these two lovers soon find themselves at a crosstoad.
Can these two both achieve their goals and not find themselves on opposite ends .
Suspense, submission, sex and yes love keep you glued to the pages .
