Editorial Reviews
For a duo whose youthful energy rejuvenated the world of house music at the start of the 2010s, it seems incredible that Disclosure are now into their second decade of musical life. The incredible vigour of those early records, the spark of invention and ever-onward musical thrust, remains with the Disclosure brothers, Howard and Guy Lawrence, to this day. 01 Pépe - Recollection 02 Harry Wolfman - LOTF 03 Cleanfield - Conflict With Clayton 04 Disclosure - Deep Sea 05 Simon Hinter - Wanna Make Love 06 &on&on - Don’t Say a Word 07 M-High - Harmony In The Distance 08 Slum Science - Mezmerized 09 Disclosure - Observer Effect 10 East End Dubs - bRave 11 Onipa - Fire (Disclosure Edit) 12 Arfa x Joe - Recognise

Ein perfekter musikalischer Synkretismus halt! :)
Whilst this instalment will likely get you moving, it just feels a bit half-hearted. It’s 12 tracks long for a start, which is one of the shortest DJ Kicks track listings in memory, making it conservative in both length (it’s under an hour long) and variety.
After a listen through it sounds, well, EXACTLY like you’d expect a Disclosure mix to sound. A good thing by ordinary standards I guess. So what am I complaining about then you might ask?
Well, we all know and love Disclosure. We know their sound and blueprint for house bangers. DJ Kicks provided an amazing opportunity for the brothers to showcase a more 3-dimensional take on their tastes and influences. They could have dug deep and put on a mix that’s diverse, memorable and exciting. Instead I found it safe, forgettable and disappointing as a result.
There’s nothing ‘wrong’ with the mix - it’s well put together and the tracks are danceable. Hardcore Disclosure fans will love it. Others who were hoping to hear them seize an opportunity and show a different edge may find it much too predictable.
The highlight for me is the final track - it’s breaks away from everything before it (which all sound like they could be Disclosure productions) and ends on a 90’s-style jazz-tinged jungle breakbeat number by Arfa & Joe which brings a welcome change of direction… If not a bit too late to save the mix as a whole.
