About the Author

Niccolo Machiavelli was an Italian politician, diplomat, founding father of political science, and author of the preeminent political treatise, The Prince. Born in Florence, Italy, Machiavelli held many government posts over his lifetime and often took leading roles in important diplomatic missions. During his time visiting other countries and nation states, Machiavelli was exposed to the politics of figures like Ceasare Borgia and King Louis XII, experiences which would inform his writings on state-building and politics. Machiavelli s political career came to an abrupt end when the Medici overthrew Florence, and he was held as a prisoner under the new regime. Tortured for a short time, he was released without admitting to any crime or treason. At this point, Machiavelli retired and turned to intellectual and philosophical pursuits, producing his two major works, The Prince and Discourses on the First Ten Books of Titus Livy. He died in 1527 at the age of 58.

I am glad that I had read and re-read Titus Livy before reading this book. Doing so is not an absolute necessity, but I think it helps.

This fantastic book reveals how the governments of ancient Rome, renaissance Florence, and, if you will, modern America are confronted with nearly identical problems, and it is also made clear that nobody has worked out solutionw much superior to those embrassed by the leaders of Republican Rome. We would all be better off if our leaders could be required to read this book.

In THE PRINCE the author provides a renaissance monarch a survival kit for coping with the problems he would likely face. In the DISCOURSES we are treated to a much broader analysis of a better and more viable system of government which is amazingly similar to what the Founding Fathers of the United States tried to achieve. Alas, as with the Roman Republic, ours has, because of its current massiveness and complexity, appeared to have lost sight of what once made it great.

Read the Prince? Think Machiavelli is a power-grabbing loon? Read this and think again. In the Discourses on Livy, Machiavelli studies the history of the Roman Republic, compares it to Italy in the Renaissance, and attempts to found a theory of political stability based upon the people, and not the elitist monarchs. One of the first works to recognize the people as superior decision makers to the state.

Machiavelli gets 5 stars and this Kindle edition gets 1 star for an average of 3 stars. The Kindle edition doesn't have a clickable table of contents. So get this book, but not this Kindle edition.

I read "Strategy"by Liddell Hart, and this is a case of that book. It is a master piece that is very useful to fully understand the theory of strategy the

author developed in the mentioned book about strategy.

Scipio is greater than many generals not only Napoleon.
