This picture book takes you another step. You are also invited to discover America through the book’s website. There you will find many activities such as fun facts about each state, take quizzes, print out color pages, watch videos, and even launch your own virtual balloon and track its voyage. Pretty cool but doesn’t suit me at the moment. I’m content with just the book. But I’m glad it’s there should I desire to venture further.
No doubt that Ms Olson is a talented illustrator. The beautiful artwork in this book complimented the text well. In fact, I think it’s one of the most gorgeous illustrations I’ve seen in a picture book. It was bright, vivid, and lively. However, I didn't feel that the book as a whole was original in concept.

In this book we follow a little red balloon as it journeys through some of America's beautiful places. In the back is a map showing you where the balloon was in each picture so you know for sure. Then on the very last page is instructions on how to launch your own balloon online. You can send the balloon to someone you know and they can send it on to someone they know. The site will track your balloon so you know all the places across the country it visits. How fun is that?! Also on the website is a map where you can learn facts about each state in our country and print off coloring pages corresponding with each state. It's like a geography lesson without even seeming like it.
If my kids were little, this is something I would be doing with them this summer. This is such a fun idea and I love it. Love it.
The illustrations are so pretty and interesting to look at. I especially love the dedication in the front that reads:
"For all the men and women who have proudly served our country. May God shed His grace on thee."
I also went to the website for this book, DiscoverAmericaBook.com, and got some ideas for other activities we can do. She has videos, quizzes and lesson plans. You can also send a virtual balloon to friends or family, who can also send it on and you can track its progress. There's a lot of great information so be sure to visit!
This is a book I am excited to add to my collection and it will be looked at over and over and cherished for many years to come!
I received a copy of this book to review. My opinion is 100% my own.
