My grandson learned a lot about volcanoes, where they are located like the Ring of Fire, the location of the largest volcano in our solar system, how seismic monitors work and the parts of a volcano. He had a good time and learned a lot.
It was a several hour project of studying, painting and finally taking the volcano outside to make it erupt. Though the chemicals are safe I recommend adult supervision when adding and mixing the chemicals and creating the eruption. We both had fun on this project and so did my wife. I recommend this as a good learning tool and a family activity.
Volcano kit included items:
* Ceramic volcano
* Obsidian arrow head
* Red food coloring for lava dye
* Chemicals to create the lava eruption
* Color activity book
* Color adventure guide
I received a sample product for evaluation and I promised to provide a fair and honest review.
The kit comes with citric acid, sodium bicarbonate, and some red coloring. Mix it together and add some water to see it work. There wasn't a huge eruption, so we decided to try one of the alternative methods suggested by Dr. Cool: baking soda, vinegar and detergent.
My son gives this kit four stars, because the volcano did not give the eruption he expected, but it was fun overall.

As a bonus it came with a small geode (a hollow rock with crystals formation inside), an obsidian glass in the shape of a spear head, and a pumice stone. My son love science. He is very curious about these samples. Especially, holding the obsidian which he has been introduced to by playing Minecraft.
Normally, you would do this with vinegar and baking soda. Probably, shipping vinegar is a bit problematic, so instead, citric acid crystals were used to ship in the box together with baking soda. Mixing them is easy, it is just one to one; one part baking soda and one part citric acid crystals. A small vial of red food coloring is also included to make the lava flow red. We filled up the volcano crater with the mixture halfway. Then we put some drops of red food coloring on a small cup of warm water. By pouring the water into the crater, the mixture made it simulate a volcanic eruption. Not a violent eruption but the baking soda and the acid will produce much bubbles that they will flow out on the sides of the volcano.
You can just perform this experiment on top of the table. Just use a big plastic trash bag and rags and you don't have to worry about the mess afterwards.
Just like other Doctor Cool's kit, this package includes a very colorful activity book. Overall, it is a very nice science kit. It could be a pretty cool gift.

But you should keep the mold and make more than just one. Get more plaster at your local hobby shop. Build a whole range of volcanoes.
