The circumstances of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's suicide, forced on him by Adolf Hitler in October 1944 for his complicity in the attempt to assassinate the Fuhrer that previous July, are familiar. Less known are the details of how Marshall, then an intelligence officer in the U.S. Army, discovered and publicized that story after the war's end. His book is partly a conventional, sympathetic biography of Rommel; it is also an interesting and useful memoir of Marshall's techniques in persuading Rommel's family and associates to talk about the Third Reich at a time when most Germans kept silent about the war. Marshall helped to recover information of historical significance that would otherwise have been lost. Photos not seen by PW.

Marshall claims to have broken the news to the world in 1945 that Rommel had not died of wounds, as claimed by Nazi propaganda, but had been forced to commit suicide. Marshall was the G-2 intelligence officer who first interviewed Rommel's widow. He originally wrote manuscript in 1945-46, but it was lost until now. While probably significant in 1946, this book suffers from trying to pull together the recollections of a 40-year-old story. Because there are no notes or bibliography, the reader has to take Marshall's word for events and conversations that happened long ago. One unexpected bonus is the final few chapters, which give an interesting account of life in occupied Germany at the conclusion of the war. Libraries with strong World War II collections may wish to purchase this, but most would be better off with David Fraser's Knight's Cross: A Life of Field Marshall Erwin Rommel (HarperCollins, 1993).

If you are interested in WWII History, this book is a must read.

Charles Marshall was a Captain in the US Army Intelligence section whose duties included interviewing captured German Prisoners, and Civilians in Germany as the Allies swept through France and Germany as the war ended, culling out the innocent from the war criminals.

He became suspect of the stories that Rommel had died of wounds at Normandy and became obsessed with finding out more about this Enigmatic German General.

He traveled throughout France and Germany, in his spare time, interviewing those who knew him and served with him and uncovered the fascinating tale told here.

Eventually he was to become friends with Mrs. Rommel and gained access to Rommel's personal letters, diaries and reports and gained a host of rich material from other friends and Officers who knew him.

Mrs. Rommel confided to him that he was one of only 4 Americans whom she liked and confided in after the war.

He provides wonderful insights into the back dealing in the Nazi hierarchy including Hitler and his Henchmen and the petty operations that led to the start of WWII and its disastrous end.

Constantly interesting, difficult to put down and most revealing.

You will be glad you have included this book in your readings of WWII.

Charles Marshall's "Discovering the Rommel Murder" is part history and part sympathetic biography. Marshall provides interesting insight to Rommel's field tactics and frame of mind during the war. General H. Norman Schwarzkolf, is quoted in the front pages, "Rommel had a feel for the battlefield like no other man." Marshall gives a detailed account of life in occupied Germany. One of the surprises in the book is how Marshall was able to get Rommel's wife, family and asssociates to talk about the Third Reich and Hitler at a time when most Germans would not. Marshall claims to have discovered that Rommel was forced to commit suicide by the Nazi's and that his death wasn't from battle wounds. The book contains many wonderful pictures. If Hitler and the Third Reich would have listened and supported Rommel, the war might have turned out a little different. One of the negatives of the book is that we must take Marshall's word for what he has written since there are no notes or bibliography to substantiate his claims. All-in-all it was a very compelling story and a great addition to my Kindle library.

Gripping Look At A Military Legend

I kind of expected a dry history book on the life and death of Rommel, but what I found instead was a gripping account of him, his tactics, his rise to power in the Third Reich, and the seeds of his ultimate downfall.

The book clearly shows why the German High Command respected Rommel, then grew ultimately to fear him, as he began to question some of their tactics and leadership, and as he himself became a bit too popular with the German people.

A great read, and not just for a WWII buff. If you've ever wanted to better understand how a great man could serve such terrible masters, this is the book for you. In the end, this book is a tragedy, just as the war itself was, and Rommel another victim of it - but that tale is filled with twists and turns that make it really hard to put down.

Facinating Read

This book is a very interesting look into the inner circle of the 3rd Reich and how its politics worked. Rommel was the most talented general they had(and one of the best of the 20 Century) and it becomes very clear very quickly that he was hung out to dry without remorse by a insane leader. You will also get a look into how quickly the Reich developed cracks once World War II started as many of the Generals realized the war was unwinnable and that a madman was leading them into destruction.

Reading this book will make one wonder things like "If Rommel would have had the supplies he needed, could he have taken the whole of North Africa?", "What if he had not been injured and tried to make peace with the Allies?" and "What if the bomb to kill Hitler had done its work, and Rommel had become one of the new leaders of Germany?"

Be forewarned, once you pick this one up, you won't want to put it down as the writing is very engaging and clear. This is a must read for students of Military/WWII history.

Review of the Rommel Murder

This is a book that I wanted to read because of interest in the man, Rommel. Rommel was respected as a great leader even by those that faced him in battle. The story unfolds when the author, an American intelligence officer, was collecting information after the end of WWII. The author met with many of Rommel's friends and also his family and even had the letters written between Rommel and his wife. The facts are exposed as to why and how Rommel's death occured. If you are interested in history and some of the personalities of WWII, this book is a must read. It does not appear that Rommel was a Nazi (as in a member of the party) but he certainly believed in the socialism aspects that unified Germany just prior to 1939. Above all he was a soldier, not a policy maker. This story definitely puts some descriptive flesh on the skeleton of Rommel's life and that was quite enjoyable to learn.

Missed the mark

I had high hopes when I started this book. Maybe there was some hidden information not yet released. Insight not yet revealed. Nope. The bulk of the book chronicles the travels of Mr Marshall through Occupied Germany. I felt duped.

For those who haven't seen the movie James Mason was in The Desert Fox:The Story of Rommel, I suggest you do. It will be well worth your time unlike this book.

Who would like? Journalists wanting to find out how one of their own was able to carry out interviews with the military minds behind the German army. But if you are of a military mind and want deep insight, move on, there many more good books on the subject.
