Whether intentional or not Jaret finds a way to help Aaron go through the change that he should have done some years before. But Aaron lives a human life, with a family, on a ranch and Jaret is a wanderer who does his best to stay away from vampyr. When one threatens the farm and the humans that live there Jaret knows he can't leave - especially when the vampyr threatening their existence is the ones he was running from well before he met Aaron.
This wasn't an easy story for me to read - more horror elements than I am used to, although that is warned about in the blurb. There are no sparkly vampires here - the vampyr are smelly, strong and pure evil. I didn't like the killing of wolves, but then that is because I love shifters of all kinds and in this book the wolves were pure animals and nothing more.
The cousins were interesting - Aaron's charges and the author did a good job of explaining a world totally unique to anything I had read before. Modern conveniences but with unusual paranormal undertones that made things that much more interesting. I would have liked to have known why there was so much hatred between the vampyr and the drakyl, but maybe that is a story for another time. In the meantime, this book is a perfect set up for a series.
Discovery is an odd combination of intense actions scenes balanced with really calm day-to-day life scenes as the author introduces us to Jaret and Aaron. Jaret is a centuries old drakyl who really doesn’t remember how old he is but knows it’s been at least five centuries since his change. Aaron is a 32 year old Montana man who suffers from a sun allergy and feels as though he may very well beat his 86 year-old uncle to the grave. Or at least he thought he was human until Jaret stumbles upon the Drakyl Ranch and finds out that the man who so entranced him a few nights earlier has no idea of what he is. Once Jaret learns why Aaron’s uncle kept his true nature from him, Jaret stays on to help out at the ranch and to be closer to Aaron because while he understands why Davis didn’t tell Aaron that Drakyl is more than his last name, he will no longer allow the man to suffer as he has been for over a decade. And while Jaret’s clock is ticking for Davis to ‘fess up, there’s an even deadlier countdown taking place that may put everything that Jaret’s found at risk.Read more ›
Although Discovery is clearly a paranormal story, Thianna Durston ensures that her characters are strong enough to drive the plot forward and this is particularly
true with regards to the protagonists, Aaron and Jaret.
Jaret is Drakyl on the run from the Vampyr hunting him, whose sense of smell leads him to Aaron and the ranch he lives on. Aaron usually finds work on Drakyl ranch difficult, having been diagnosed with an allergy to the sun when he was young. That is until his first sexual encounter with Jaret.
When Jaret is brought on as a ranch hand Thianna Durston gives us the pieces we need to put together the story of Aaron’s life. Whilst most of the information is
predictable, there is still enough to keep us interested in the story.
For me, some of the plot was lost in the erotic scenes between Jaret and Aaron, and I would have liked more than just the one fight scene between Vampyr and Drakyl.
However, Discovery is a promising start to the series and I am intrigued to see how Thianna Durston will continue the story.

I’ve always been a fan of Thianna work, and this is no different.
We’ve got the bad guys, Vampyr, and the good guys, drakyl. They both go back hundred of years, hating each other pretty much the whole time.
Jaret, has been around for hundreds of years and to escape the vampyr he swims across the ocean and discovers a scent he must have. He finds that to be Aaron. Aaron, found out many years ago that he had a rare blood disease and is allergic to the sun. This is the reason he’s been feeling so bad, until Jaret shows up and gives him special meds. With training and honesty Aaron finds out the truth.
Jarat and Aaron are explosive together. Those first couplings, hawt! But not just that, the way they talk and communicate, help each other. All special. The dynamic between all the cousins was entertaining but also gave us a real look into the power of family and what that means to the Drakyl family.
I liked that Uncle and family knew the family tree, that genetic’s and bloodline were more involved then the Grandfather wanted to believe but pride and a lack of actually drakyl markers showing up, may have proved that in fact the curse had gone away. But Davis knew better, knew that Aaron was infected and did nothing.
The way that the cousins rallied around in the end all made for a fabulous start to the great series.
