There were however entirely too many points of view, changing several times within one chapter and even within one paragraph so I was soon getting confused about whom I should cheer for.
The very simple language made it a chore and already halfway through the book I wished I was done. Not very refined and quite repetitive, the author's choice of words ended up creating a strangely emotionless description of events rather than what could have been a gripping, fast paced story.
People either 'loved' or 'hated' a thing, situation or person, every group of people was referred to as 'the guys', and the exchange between the highly trained men seemed downright childish.
A good story wasted on minor quality narrative.
Zack, Alex and little Maddy went home with her. Alex has issues trusting people because of the lousy foster homes they have been placed into. Zack and Alex can communicate without words, and Kate found herself hearing what they say. How can this be? Nick has been observing Kate from a distance, and when he found out she had taken the three children, he made it a point to continue to survey.
Nick and Robert had been close at one point. But Robert doesn't follow the rules of the Association so maybe he works for the Division. Who knows. What happens is bad....very bad. Some one wants the children and when they discover who Kate is....she is in grave danger. Brooks is evil and has been collecting children with abilities for years.
What happens with Kate, Nick, Robert and the children will have you on the edge of your seat. The storyline is fascinating and the characters are very real. I love this book.
Read on my friends.
I enjoyed this book. It was an easy, enjoyable read and I look forward to reading the next in the series.
There were times when you could tell this was the authors first book. She had a way of pointing out the obvious a lot, which made this story a pretty easy read.
The story was still pretty good. Can't wait to start reading the next one.
We learn, in a preface, about the love and sacrifice Kate's parents made before we meet her.
We are aware that things may surprise us.
We meet Kate, who while aware that she is somewhat, shall we say empathic, is not aware of the full extent of her powers/abilities.
She learns a lot about herself after deciding to foster three siblings, who also prove to have unusual gifts.
And of course there is an evil guy who wants them for his own bad reasons.
There are interesting supernatural elements to the characters, suspense and some very interesting twists. I found one of the surprises towards the end to be very clever. The characters are likable and the "gifts" actually work in quite believably.
While not as nuanced as more experienced novelists, I see a lot of potential in this author's series moving forward. I can't wait to read book two, both for the story to develop and to see Char's growth as a writer.
