After a series of hopeless relationships, Kate O’Neill is ready to settle down. So when her boyfriend Brian finally asks her to marry him, she accepts. Her only misgiving is that her family don’t like him. But she’s sure they’ll come around in time.

Hilarious, laugh out loud story with a great plot.

This may be the funniest book I have ever read. Kate, our heroine, comes from a chaotic, dramatic family. Her mom frequently slips into past roles she has played as an actress as she deals with life. Kate becomes engaged to Brian, or as her family calls him, the "Tree Shagger". Brian is a therapist who believes in sweat lodges, a macrobiotic, vegatarian diet, and such things as scream therapy. The descriptions the family have of him, his self-help groups he attends, and basically everything about this character make this book just indescribably funny. I also love Kate's roommate, Freddy, who is gay and so funny.
Kate has always had a crush on Will, her brother's best friend. Will is the manager of the band Walking Wounded, whose characters are also highly enjoyable (the way they relate to Kate's aunt at a wedding was hilarious). Will takes the band to Tuscany, away from the hustle and bustle, so they can work on their new music. They need a chef, which happens to be what Kate is, although she is out of work at the time. She goes along, and her love for Will becomes even stronger.
I don't want to ruin any plots or surprises. Kate's mom, Brian, Freddy and the band are comic relief. I've read this book several times now, and it never gets old. I rarely laugh out loud when reading, but this book has me doing so every time I read it. Move over Cathy Kelly! Clodagh Murphy may be my new favorite author.

This book as hilarious! I often have "LOL" moments in books, but this book was full of them. I could absolutely see this book as a movie. The O'Neills are a hurricane family in the best & worst ways. The way they butt into each others lives made for quite the comedy. Kate needed to find more self-worth. She was so insecure that she never felt she deserved better. Will wasn't insecure in the same way Kate was but he always seemed to be taking care of others & never allowed someone to take care of him. The only thing that I didn't like about the book was that it dragged on a bit. Kate was so insecure she never would take what people were saying to her seriously. It was frustrating & I found myself skimming over parts towards the end. I also wish, at some point, Kate would have confronted Rachel about her egotistical & self-centered actions.
This book was a fantastic read that will brighten up the gloomiest of days.

Recommended for readers 17 & up.
Contains sexual content, adult situations & language.

I found this book hilariously funny and laugh out loud in places. Change the name from O'Neil to Molony and this could well be my own family ...loud boisterous and interfering as all get out. Some of the minor characters are hilariously penned from the wacky old aunt at Rachel's wedding to Freddie Kate's gay flatmate to Brian the tree hugger, Kate's quite detestable boy friend.
I would have given this book five stars except the middle of the book dragged and the author 'told' us the story instead of engrossing this reader by "showing" Will and Kate's love story come alive.
After the wonderful wacky opening chapters this was more than a little disappointing and then ending was too rushed as if the author was in a rush to finish it. On the whole a good yarn from an author who I'm sure will only get better,

As I read this book, I was waiting to see why it was names "The Disengagement Ring". I still don't know as I never read any reference to a ring. Maybe it is a European word? Anyways, I enjoyed the story with the quirky characters and story. I felt the physical description of Kate in the beginning of the book didn't match other parts of the book which was confusing. Sometimes, I thought there was too much dialogue kand no action.

I have now read it twice and the first time didn't leave a review because I was unsure how many stars to award. I have settled on 4 as initially we are introduced to a lot of secondary characters (wedding with siblings, friends and their partners) and I had trouble keeping then straight, on a second reading it was easier, don't be put off as it is fun.

I must start by saying that I don't usually read 'chick lit' (which is a horrible term anyway) - my preferred genre is crime/mystery - with a bit of fantasy thrown in. So this book is a departure for me - and one which I am glad that I made. The book was recommended to me by a friend, and I decided I needed something different to read on a recent trip so I brought it along. Good decision! I was totally immersed in the story from the first page, and found the main characters (Kate & Will) both engaging, and 'real'. Perhaps because much of the book is set in my home town (Dublin) I was able to relate to it, but the parts set in Tuscany were equally interesting - and oh so romantic. The story flows from start to finish - it doesn't feel episodic, or have passages which are merely 'filler'. All the characters have a purpose - even the ones who might be considered caricatures (the brittle model, the self obsessed 'celebrity', the new age boyfriend) - and they move the story forward or provide a catalyst for other actions. This is a first book for this author - it won't be the last one of hers which I read.

A book with a simple story which reaches a satisfying conclusion.

I liked the charactisations. Some great descriptions of Kate,Will, Brian and her family plus the different personalities of the band members ...this made them come alive for me.

This book was definitely character lead , and you developed empathy for most of them .
The plot was simplistic.
I enjoyed the descriptions of Brian's workshops and new age lifestyle ...which at times added humour to the story.
I gave a four rather than five star because I felt that the misunderstandings became a bit too much, too contrived. At times it felt as if you were re-reading a scene as things would turn out well only for another ' misunderstanding' to occur . This seemed a little too laboured towards the end .
Otherwise, very enjoyable and will read another of her books.

The Plus: The storyline was okay. (Childhood friends to lovers plot)
The Minus: The delivery was pretty mediocre. There was a lot of unnecessary focus on the supporting characters.
So much drug use was described in this book. I'm high just thinking about it. What was really dissappointing as well was the lack of help the obviously drug and sex addicted characters didn't get.
Cheating was okay. (The main characters were both in relationships during their hookup)
There was a major disagreement, which could have been easily solved. But Nooooo was unnecessarily dragged on.
Even in romanclandia thus story is doomed from the start.

She sort of knows it herself but it takes the family plot and their co-conspirator Will to make her see that. It's another 'men prefer real women with real shapes' book - and in this one the family goody-goody gets her come-uppance too - I loved it!
