+Keeps the core battle system of the Disgaea series but adds some much needed improvements. (Magichange is improved from D3 for example)
+Wide array of classes (although not as many as you would hope- more on that later)
+Cute storyline (but lacking slightly in depth)
-Many classes from previous games are entirely missing, and they don't really have a good equivalent introduced. There are new classes, but many of them are just okay and I rarely found myself using them. (On a side note, you can get some of the classes from previous games but it requires the purchase of DLC)
-The characters are cute and charming, but not as memorable as those from previous games. In fact, the game actually relies on bringing some characters back from previous titles as part of the main storyline. I don't mind that, but it definitely overshadows the original D4 characters and makes one realize that they aren't really comparable.
-The storyline is probably the least compelling/cohesive of any Disgaea game (with the possible exception of Disgaea 3). It was cute and it did the job, but it just lacked some of the nuance that made earlier titles so memorable.
Overall, great game in the series and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys sRPGs. There are some minor complaints, but they definitely aren't enough to detract from the fun!
Overall, GREAT game and I highly recommend it.
I choose to play Disgaea 4 in English, and I enjoyed the voice acting. The first Disgaea is still my favorite in the series, but Disgaea 4 is a close second.
I would say if you enjoyed the first Disgaea game, but hated Disgaea 2 and 3, then you will most likely enjoy this one.
-Monsters now speak instead of making noises, some are HILARIOUS (SLUUUUUDGE POWAAAA!!!!). You also get to choose between three sound fx sets for each character.
-the campaign trolls you a bit towards the end.
-you can't zoom in as you could on previous games which is a little annoying
I played in Japanese voices so I cannot speak to the dub but the voice acting was top notch. They have removed some of the more annoying things from the other games and still added depth.
Though I have grown out of the disgaea powerleveling experience, I did greatly enjoy the 50 hours I put into this one.
