The story doesn't take itself too seriously and the characters are just all around fun with even the minor NPCs having some funny voice acting. This game has some anime tropes in it, mainly in regards to character interactions, but I've never felt it was anything more than intentionally cheesey.
Gameplay... a.k.a. the meat of any SRPG. If you don't have a good core gameplay loop then you barely have a game is what I always say. You'll be happy to know that Disgaea 5 loves you. Almost from the get-go you can pick between a number of classes to add to your party that will surely scratch whatever fantasy character itch you have. For me I love monks and mages in games so once the recruiting area was available I got two of each for good measure. I've heard it said there's over 40 classes in the game, not including optional DLC classes so there will definitely be something up your alley, maybe not from the outset but it's there if you're willing to work for it.
Which brings me to why this game is truly great. It lets you play around with your stats and abilities in a very deep, but still accessibly streamlined manner. Think I'm kidding? You can teleport inside items in your inventory a fight the stats of said items to improve them. Yes. You can kick your chocolate bar's ass to make it more useful. That's the kind of game this is and this is the kind of game you've been missing. Can't recommend it enough
New chara monsters and some that didnt return for 4 to 5, which makes me sad.
Game is enjoyable none the less. Each game has their flaws and their way of playing. If you are fan get them all.
