Mark Steyn is being sued by Michael Mann for saying bad things about him, and is in turn countersuing Michael Mann for saying bad things about him. The spectacle is profoundly silly, but also carries a certain threat to free speech, impelling the New York Times, the ACLU, and other defenders of free speech to submit amica curiae to the court in support of Steyn. By contrast, Mann has no amica curiae. What happened to all the scientists, scientific associations, popular journals (e.g. National Geographic), newspapers (the Guardian, not to mention the New York Times) that are on record as believing in human-caused global warming?
This book provides the answer. More than 100 scientists, most of whom do indeed believe in global warming, are quoted, often at length, in opposing Mann's Hockey Stick, once the very symbol of impending disaster, shown prominently in Al Gore's Inconvenient Truth movie, making the front cover of the IPCC third report (and repeated in about 6 different illustrations throughout the report) and just generally the iconic symbol of global warming. Mann himself proudly includes the creation of the graph in his CV, and equally proudly proclaimed himself to be a Nobel Prize winner (at least until rebuked by the Nobel Prize Foundation.) But the Hockey Stick has fallen on hard times, appears exactly nowhere in subsequent IPCC reports, and even Mann himself has since publlshed papers that appear to include the Little Ice Age, although still refusing to admit the global reality of the Medieval Warming Period, when the Vikings found Greenland to be indeed green for a few hundred years before descending into its present year-round snow and ice.
For the full story of the Hockey Stick, the indispensable book is the Hockey Stick Illusion by A.W. Montford. That is a pretty exciting (to us climate junkies) detective story showing how a Canadian mining engineer, used to investigating claims of wonderful finds of oil, turned his attention to Mann's claim of wonderful data hidden in tree rings. A terrific read.
This book is more limited, just a collection of quotes about the failure of the Hockey Stick from many different angles. However, it is impressive in the breadth and depth of the criticisms and the wide scientific experience of the authors, ranging from cloud physics to oceanographers to paleontologists to geologists. Although I follow the climate debate pretty closely, I was stunned to find such a large number of well-known scientists who had criticized the Hockey Stick (and/or its creator) in such explicit ways. But now I think I understand why nobody was willing to support Mann in his suit by submitting a friend of the court brief.
The book is easy to read, well edited so that the remarks of the scientists are kept on topic. Very useful as a reference book for one side in the climate debate. Also good for those on the fence and for those who just love watching a good fight.

Review
I recommend Steyn's book highly, because it really gets to the heart of the matter about that lack of scientific rigor in climate science that has become a poster child for noble cause corruption . - Anthony Watts --Watts Up With That
At a time when the U.S. and the world's nations are trying to put together an agreement to tackle climate change (for better or for worse), Steyn's book reminds everyone of Climategate, why the public doesn't trust climate scientists and aren't buying their "consensus". - Judith Curry --Climate Etc.
It's probably the longest, funniest, most savvily organized and meticulous "screw you" in the history of Western literature. - Laura Rosen Cohen --endofyourarm.com

If you read the history of the various Popes in the Vatican, a rational person comes away with the sense that the Popes are not God-inspired men-of-God: They are just Men, acting as Men have acted forever.
Steyn's book describes the scenes and stages and backdrops and drama of Michael "Mankind's Climate Goalie and Self-Declared Nobel Prize-Winner" Mann. In this narrative, Mann can be seen as the whiny emotionally-deranged teenager that he is. A real scientist certainly doesn't take to a blog or worse, Twitter (the haven of all emotionally deranged teenagers, no matter their real age) in order to defend his results. A real scientist has that nags like facts and evidence and even better, Other Real Scientists, to defend his results. But Mann has none of the above, except for other emotionally deranged teenagers in his profession.
Rachel Carson comes from the same cloth, but she only wrote a book of fiction, which turned out to be based on a science experiment done by someone else. When that actual scientist was informed of his experiment's incorrect protocol, he re-ran the experiment, and discovered his error. Michael Mann has done everything in his teenage power to deny that he was wrong.
Michael Mann is not a scientist. Newton, Galileo, Einstein would have all bitch-slapped him, as he truly deserves.

This book will make you angry: angry that even though you knew from intuition and knowledge of lefty politics (beginning with Ayn Rand's 1971 'The New Left: The Anti-Industrial Revolution') that Anthropogenic (man made) Global Warming (AGW) was a hoax, you wish Mark Steyn wrote this book sooner so you could've been annihilating climate hoaxters with the countless death rays of scientists' quotes contained in this book; angry that the hockey stick and Gore's movie based upon are is being used to indoctrinate innocent children in American and Worldwide schools; angry on behalf of the thousands of brilliant world renowned Physicists, Climatologists, Statisticians, Geophysicists, Oceanographers, etc, with all their PhD's and Nobel Prizes and credentials, who have for nearly 20 years derided the hockey stick as the worst of politically motivated junk science lies - as illustrated in this book - and whom have been blacked out by the media, politicians, and the IPCC; angry that this hoax is being used by the UN, IPCC, EPA, our Democratic Party, and the anti-American global community, to 'Degrow' and 'Deindustrialize' the USA and its American Capitalism and to attack capitalism, globally.
Even if you are the liberalist of Liberal Democrats and on board with all of the myriad environmental hoaxes and boogeymen, the facts in this book should infuriate you if you allow your self to come to terms with the fact that your exulted leaders in the US Democratic Party and in the world-wide Globalist, Statist community, have been lying to you; and that they and the 'scientists' in the IPCC laugh at you and treat you like drooling simpletons.
Read this book, and absorb the fact that vastly all the scientists quoted herein are card-carrying lefties of all makes and stripes, yet have the self-respect and ethical integrity to speak the truth about this hoax. Then absorb that they are all silenced and labled 'deniers', like some Gallileanesque heritics by a Global-Warming-Religion Theocracy; and that politicians, legislators, and Attorneys General have already begun the process, in certain locales, to make it a crime to exercise free speech and merely question AGW. Absorb that this is a media, academia, and political conspiracy to perpetrate a hoax for the sole purpose of robbing you and your children of liberty in order to push something plain, humdrum, and unsexy - Communism.
Yes. Stateism, Marxism, Socialism, Communism, Fabianism, Progressivism, Liberalism; whichever label you prefer, it all amounts to 'Green is the new Red', and AGW is simply a vehicle to push the ideology.
Mark Steyn, you are an 'undocumented' Godsend (sorry atheists and secularists) and national treasure, wit and brilliance nonpareil.

Brigade level assault
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2015Verified Purchase
Mark Steyn's unique and mordant humo(u)r is deployed here just enough to weave together the eviscerating pronouncements of scientists whose relevant credentials are unassailable. He wisely uses this light touch to avoid diminishing the scientists' points, and to group their collective skirmishes against the colossal knob Mann into a brigade level assault.
He's at his best when exposing the the fraud of s***ty historical temperature proxies pre 1960s, and when highlighting that Mann's "science" fails the only two tests that all real science must pass; viz, no ex-post predictive ability of any climate model, and no reproducible experiment that consistently disproves alternative hypotheses. Science can be both interesting and useful. Climate hysteria is about faith and politics, both of which can also be both interesting and useful: but they have no more relation to "science" than they have to Baroque counterpoint. The unraveling will be a whimper, not a bang. This book increases the volume of that whimper, and is therefore very welcome and lovely.

You really must read this book whatever your politics and stance on climate change
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 30, 2018Verified Purchase
I am an ordinary person. Like most people I have, over the years, received climate change information via the media and many, many things have passed me by as a result and I did not have the time to actively winkle out the truth from propaganda. I have only become aware in recent times of the con perpetrated by Mann et al and the sickening financial consequences of mis-directed global budgets as a result. I found Steyn's book as very useful summary of events and taking scientists' opinions and arguments from across the spectrum of for and against climate change presents a balance of opinion that is united in one thing - Mann was manipulative and deceitful and has truly damaged the independent role that science should take in shaping our approach to man's relationship and impact on the world.

Penetrating Peer Review Presented for the Public - a climate clown gets his comeuppance.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 23, 2015Verified Purchase
This book makes an excellent contribution to what passes for the 'climate debate'. The Mann et al. hockey-stick was such a sloppy, loaded, junky piece of work that the authors should have long ago disowned it. Now junk science is usually dealt with in due course by critical reviews, but junk scientists are characterised by their ignoring of them. That too would not matter but for the fact that the IPCC in general, and Houghton in particular, made a really big promotional splash with this hockey-stick, realising quite rightly that it looked scary and would get the kind of headlines they wanted, and the kind of politicians they wanted. Page after page of condemnation will not right their wrongs, but it will get one part of the despicable saga of climate scaremongering very conveniently on the record. Buy this book to keep for your own bookshelf, and buy more copies too to keep handy for anyone you encounter who might not be aware of the descent of Mann.

How is this Mann still walking free?
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 24, 2019Verified Purchase
I'd always been sceptical about the hockey stick- I found it staggering that so much blind faith had been invested in it- but the sheer scale of the lies, fraud, bullying, collusion and utter incompetence of those involved is frightening. Rational debate hasn't a snowball in hell's chance with this level of egomania and hysteria running wild. I analyse charts of indices for a living and when I and those I work with see a chart that looks too good to be true, ( a mailshot pushing software or a particular share, for instance), we immediately do our own analysis and always uncover the true picture quite easily. Not because we are brilliant, (I'm certainly not comparing myself to McIntyre & McKitrick!), but because it's bloody obvious! So, if a simpleton like me can see this sort of thing for what it is and spend a bit of time checking it out, how is it possible that so many distinguished people constantly failed to even suspect anything? Well, this book lays it all out superbly and clearly and exposes the disgraceful state of climate politics, ( I won't say science as there is little evident), and the extraordinary lengths those involved are prepared to go to in order to keep the CAGW show rolling. Mark Steyn is to be congratulated for standing up to this fraudulent bully and compiling the information in such a concise way. After reading this book, (and EVERYONE should read this book), you will be left wondering how it is possible that Mann is still walking free, let alone in gainful employment, and asking how it is possible that so many still fawn over him. Why has he not been on trail for such fraud? Why, every time he is exposed, is it brushed away by the very people who are supposed to uphold the integrity of science? A must read- highly recommended.

Huge sledgehammer cracks tiny nut - but it had to be done
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 11, 2021Verified Purchase
The purpose of this book was to show how a large number of scientists - 120 are quoted in this book - think that Michael Mann's 'Hockey Stick' stunt was fraudulent and unscientific. It does get rather repetitive, as scientists naturally home in on the same weaknesses in Mann's argument - the fact that he refused to reveal his sources, the fact that he mixed proxy data with real data, and that he built the whole theory on tree rings from a very small number of trees. And he tried to write off many solid years of climate science which had firmly established climate history - the mediaeval warming period and the little ice age, for example.
But the repetition was necessary, just to show how many people believe what a load of rubbish Mann was spouting (and spouts still I fear). Because hugely expensive and wrong-headed decisions have been taken on the basis of Mann's bogus theories.
The problem is, Steyn is preaching to the converted. The general public still believe that 97% of scientists believe in the man-made warming theory (it's actually 77 scientists out of an original sample of over 3000 - these were the 77 who were saying the right thing). Those who go along with the religion of Big Green will not read this book, and they are the ones taking all the decisions.
