From Publishers Weekly
In an age of frenetic debates over low-carb vs. low-fat diets, O'Neil and Webb advocate for an indisputable method for weight loss: calories out must exceed calories in, while simultaneously acknowledging that dieting doesn't have to focus on deprivation. They draw on their experiences (O'Neil was a CNN producer and Webb is a nutrition writer with a Ph.D.) to create "a girlfriend's guide to eating out, eating in, entertaining, and traveling." Though they claim it's "the very first diet book for glamour girls of all ages and sizes," it's actually more of a lifestyle book, likely to appeal to the demographic of women who read fitness magazines and have 15 or fewer pounds to lose, or want to maintain a healthy weight while living a busy, changing life. The authors give "the dish" on nutrition, eating in, dining out, drinking, exercising, dressing to maximize your assets and even cheating (in moderation), with each author occasionally sharing a personal experience or preference. Throughout, O'Neil and Webb present sidebars (and occasional recipes) from experts, chefs, restaurateurs and magazine editors including Wolfgang Puck, Felidia Bastianach and Bon Appétit editor Barbara Fairchild. Perky writing sometimes belies the deep knowledge and research underlying the nutritional information presented here, yet the authors do a tremendous service by digesting the latest studies on such controversial subjects such as soy ("How much is too much?"), raw food diets and supplements. Their clear analyses will help readers wade through the maze of conflicting nutrition information.

Carolyn has a talent for relaying to us "seniors" (and others) what to eat, the benefits of exercise, and frankly, how to get more out of life! She has a quick sense of humor which always makes things fun.....especially unpleasant chores, etc. Right away, you love the notion of being FABULOUS at an "older" age! Now I am by no means a calendar pinup (not sure the younger set knows what that is), but I do have a lot of energy and am very active. Eating healthy is what it's all about! Get captivated by Carolyn's knowledge and you will realize it is not an exercise of dread.....on the contrary, it's about opening up a whole new world for yourself! The investment to get this book is minimal but the benefit is oh so huge and is life changing!!! Remember, age is just a number !!!
It's a fun read, great info, and a wonderful reference. FABULOUS girlfriend/sister/mother gift! And seriously, wouldn't this be a fun change for a book club?
If you've read French Women Don't Get Fat and wondered what to do besides eating your weight in leek soup and homemade yogurt, this is the book for you. It's a purely American look at how you, with a few tricks and tweaks, can eat and live well and not be diet-obsessed.
I've only bought two diet books in my life. One is Susan Estrich's Making the Case for Yourself: A Diet Book for Smart Women and the other is The Dish. My point is that I think before I spend money on a diet book, and so should you. We all know that fad diets don't work, and we're sick of depriving ourselves for a short-term weight loss. The Dish is a handy reference and brightly written resource with everyday strategies for the long haul.
I've known Densie since we went on our first double date together in eighth grade, and I call her all the time for nutrition advice. Now, everyone else gets to tap the same resource. That's only fair, I guess, since she has a Ph.D. in nutrition and is a noted expert. And, I promise, although she likes chocolate as much as the next person (read that me), she practices what she preaches! -DW, Ph.D.
