I owned a 2tb Seagate external drive for years. My wife and I used it for storing some of our data that we don't use often like our family photos, and sure enough it fell off of our entertainment system onto our carpeted floor and died. Yes....I know....I should have had a backup. Luckily because of my wife's inability to have a organized file structure on our laptop, she found a duplicate folder of all the photos that took us months to scan. After that I set out on a mission to have the best data storage solution on a non-commercial scale, which leads me to this product.
I did extensive research on data storage and came to the conclusion that I wanted a 4-bay NAS enclosure to start off with. Because my wife and I aren't rich by any means, plus having seen with my own eyes WD MyBooks fall from heights astronomically high and be completely fine, I knew that I wanted to go with WD drives, which then led me to this puppy. I did have my eyes on a QNAP NAS but the price was bit out there for what I wanted. The EX4100 had everything that I wanted for a good price point. I bought the diskless version, that way I could spread out the total cost of the drives over a period of time. It does come with a very easy to understand OS with a web login, and also mobile apps, which leads me to the next reason I liked the EX4100.
As someone said before in one of the reviews, the mobile MyCloud app does look a bit out-dated compared to other apps. It does its job at letting you view your files from anywhere in the world, granted that the speed at which the app searches through your files is based off of how fast your ISP connection (I have a the slowest package that my ISP has...15mb/s down so opening a folder through the app takes a couple seconds), and your device connection is. The one thing about this app that I think actually one ups google is that it can automatically backup your photos and videos from your phone. Now google can do that too but it gets backup to "Google Photos" so you can't actually work with the files unless you download them. The MyCloud app actually lets you SPECIFY A FOLDER to backup to which then allows you to organize things allot easier.
The other thing that I setup on it was a Plex server. It does advertise that you can install Plex on it. This is true, but if you look at the Plex Media Server compatibility list, yes it can run on a EX4100 and dish out your media, but the one thing that it cannot do is transcoding. I thought I wouldn't run into this issue, but after it refused to even show subtitles on some movies I had, I knew I had do something else. Re-purposing an old desktop with linux solved the issue. All in all, I can't complain about that issue because it was specified on the compatibility sheet, plus I do feel more comfortable taking the workload off of the NAS.
Now for the big topic....BACKUP. This is not a backup solution...this is merely a high capacity storage solution. My temporary backup plan will be to hookup a external drive (1Tb MyPassport Ultra to be exact) to the NAS and synchronize only the critical data...in my case family photos, videos, resumes, etc. Later on in the future I plan on purchasing a 2bay MyCloud NAS fitted with two 6Tb drives in RAID 0 to have a complete backup of the primary NAS.

Throw on top of that the horribly slow parity checking, the one time I would expect to see the processor and available RAM consumed, it wasn't.
While I configured the unit yesterday, it is still parity checking and the last message on the screen was firmware update failure. BTW, the web GUI doesn't apparently know that that happened.
If WD could be bothered to pay a couple hundred to the 50 Indian developers they probably use, many of the items I mention could be fixed. Not knocking outsourced labor (companies I work with use them all the time), I just know that the reason this isn't fixed is because the company isn't in the business of selling web software, it's a sufferance they absorb to sell their hardware. I can see the logic now: ?Does it make an iSCSI target? Yes. Good enough.
I would never use these in a mission critical environment but, it is adequate for my development systems.

The mycould technology is a nice touch as well. You can get to your files from anywhere by logging into mycloud.com
One minor annoyance with me is every couple of days, I'll get an e-mail notification that the Firmware needs updating. I don't need to be reminded of this as I'll do it when I'm ready. Plus, I like to read the WD Community Forums for a few months after an update comes out to ensure the Firmware won't break anything.
I use the WD Sync software to keep files synced between the NAS and my computer. It's a bit buggy at the moment, but could be a great product if WD decides to update it.
