Investing in these sets is a big financial decision for most folks (it sure was for us, not to mention spacing considerations.) We picked ours up for $125 on Amazon but - even though we've been collecting these for a while - we still had to wince! Though it's much larger than Flo's, I think the main reasons this set isn't double the price - at least in my opinion - are that first, the light show (one of the main draws of these sets) isn't quite as spectacular (i.e. the motel sign only lights up in white unlike the yellow/orange/blue/white lights in the movies, with the only other lights being rather subdued... the accent cones, the overhead lights under the cone awnings, and the inside of the shop, all which have the same yellowish glow). Second, the included Precision model of Sally (absolutely gorgeous, meticulous paint job with rubber wheels, head and tail lights that actually light up when you press her rear windshield, powered by 3 AG13 batteries) only fits half way into her rental shop due to her sales desk (which had to be bulky enough/raised high enough to conceal 3 "C" batteries). Third, not all of her Precision friends from the other sets would be able to have a cozy night's sleep there... Luigi & little Guido certainly could, with one of the cone's garage door securely shut, but Sarge barely has enough headroom, has to be firmly pushed in, and the garage door won't close completely for him - or Sally herself for that matter - because they're a hair too long, Flo's front end sticks out and Fillmore's height means it won't close at all. While this is good ol' Radiator Springs, where I'm sure it's safe enough to sleep with your garage doors open, just seems like Mattel should've adjusted the cone dimensions to accommodate at least the models in the Precision sets. Poor Mater will have to be content with his tow yard shack - he doesn't come close to fitting into a cone!
Those are the downsides, but there are so many other TERRIFIC features about this set! If you're unfamiliar with the Sally Carrera character, she's designed as a baby blue 2002 Porsche 911 Carrera, the only modern car in the town (until her eventual boyfriend, main character Lightning McQueen, enters the picture!) She'd been a high-powered attorney in California, but dropped out of the rat race to settle into this small town along famed Route 66 (one of the originals in the U.S. highway system), refurbishing and becoming the proprietor of the Cozy Cone Motel. Her character was inspired by Dawn Welch (who'd purchased Rock Cafe, a famous restaurant on Route 66, which she refurbished and fought hard to have listed on the National Register of Historic Places), and its interesting to note that Sally's motel (where everything has a safety-cone theme) was inspired by the real-life Wigwam Motel chain built in the 1930's-40's (actually mistakenly named... the "wigwams" more resembled teepees - the cone shaped tents of the peoples indigenous to the Great Plains - than wigwams, which were domed dwellings used by Native American tribes in the Northeast!) Of the seven Wigwam hotels, only three remain (Cave City, KY, Holbrook, AZ, and at the border of the cities of Realto/San Bernardino, CA), which are also on the National Register of Historic Places - Sally's motel is inspired by the ones out west.
On to this amazing set! The base is nicely textured (as is the "grass" around the sign, as well as the grassy and garden areas surrounding the rental shop - complete with cone shaped umbrellas and speakers on poles, "cone" flowers (ha!), cactuses, shrubs, even a couple of little trellises (most all of these details have a rubberish feel to them and can be rotated.) Though you can see through the windows of the shop that the empty shelves don't house her caution cone collectibles, it does have some cactuses in cone shaped planters, and her "Welcone" mat is at the entrance. Each of the cute cone motel rooms has a paned window on each side, a paned working garage door (unfortunately, no detailing inside the rooms), cone shaped light under the striped awning, each with unique cone planters outside with cone lights next to them, along with a TV antenna perched on top. One of my favorite things is that they included the fountain near the sign, with a spinning wheel of cones that sits in the "water" (if you've seen the Cars movies, water pumps up through a large cone in the water, splashing into the small cones on the wheel and spinning it.) The sign itself lights up the "Cozy Cone Motel" and "Vacancy" lettering, the car's lettering (Z Z Z Z, as if sleeping) and the "100% Refrigerated Air" lettering (the real-life slogan of the historic Blue Swallow Motel on Route 66 in Tucumcari, NM!)
And what we've all been waiting for... the light show! As mentioned, while more subdued than most of the sets thus far (with the exception of Mater's fittingly dimly lit tow yard), Sally's set looks amazing in the dark! There's a button on the back of the set that can be switched from the off position to either normal mode or light sensor mode. The function button is disguised in the right section of ground near the road. In normal mode, pressing the button makes the shop light up first, then the various cone lights (incrementally, which is very cool!), and finally the sign. Pressing it again causes them to quickly go out, then (other than the sign) repeatedly turn on and dim out on in various patterns. Pressing again dims all of the lights until they go off (if you hold the button down for over a couple of seconds, you get a longer light show, and it will stop automatically if it's not fiddled with for a while.) In light sensor mode, the show begins after @ 5 seconds in a darkened room, and you can press the function button to get the patterns, turn it off, etc. Again, they'll stop automatically if the set sits for a while. (There's also a place to plug in an AC/DC adapter if you'd prefer that to batteries.)
So there you have it - Sally's Cozy Cone Motel! We'd heard earlier in the year that its introduction might be delayed until 2018 due to the glut of Cars 3 merchandise out there... so happy that didn't turn out to be the case! And we're HOPING that means the next set due out (Ramone's House of Body Art) will be introduced in time for Christmas. If they keep to the original schedule, we should see final four sets throughout 2018 (Radiator Springs Courthouse & Fire Department, Lizzie's Radiator Springs Curios, Doc's Ornament Valley Mechanical Clinic, and The Piston Cup Racing Museum.) "So Hon'... about that bigger table...!!!"
The lights do not work, even with fresh batteries. There were no instructions or any literature in the box. What a disappointment!!!
