My parents bought this as an early holiday present for my four-year old daughter. She absolutely loves it. We opened it early because my parents wanted to see her enjoy the present. When my daughter realized that the box near the fireplace held this vanity she yelled, "Oh. My. God. This is what I always wanted! I always wanted this, Poppy!"

It took a little while to put together-- the screws don't really screw in easily, but after it was put together it looked wonderful. It's definitely one of the prettiest vanities for sale and it works very well. There is a magnet in the wand that causes the compartments to open up and reveal either pretend nailpolish, lipgloss, a powder puff and something else (escapes me right now) when compartments are touched with the wand and it really does seem as if this is done by magic. We were just in Disney World last week and my daughter went to the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique so we actually have a bunch of REAL disney makeup I will use to replace the pretend stuff. (If you get a chance to take your daughters here, do so-- it's a great experience!) The on/off switch is a large gem that lights up when the item is "on". When the gem is in place, in the on position, the vanity has several lights that sparkle on and off. And, it's then that the princesses-- Cinderella, Belle, and Aurora are revealed in the magic mirrors. They all speak and say pleasant things in a very clear/non-electronic voice.

The absolute ONLY complaints I have with this toy is that it's made of the cheaper-type brittle plastic, rather than the nicer "Step 2" or "little Tikes" plastic. It's the kind of plastic that can break if you trip over it. So, it's not tremendously durable although, admittedly, the vanity will be against a wall rather than in the center of a room.

My 3 year old daughter got this for christmas. We just finished playing with it.
Its very cute, went together with no real issues. My daughter loves it. We have transfered all of her dress up jewelry to it and added some real nail polish and a few little things.
My only issue with it is this. The doors have a hard time opening. I have deduced that they "Magic" is a magnet latch. But on two of my doors, the round ones, the doors just won't open. I was ready to pry mine open with a screw driver (Glad I didn't because they are spring loaded and would have never closed again) when my daughter laid the wand on top of the symbol and sort of pressed down on it. Voila, the music played and it opened. We still get the left one to open 1 out of 10 tries. There is no other way to open it, no trouble shooting info in the box.

EDIT: After several days of playing with this I realized what I was doing wrong. I was holding the wand upside down and moving it too fast over the compartments. Those of you saying its not working, flip your wand over and do it slower. Now I know what I am doing, it works great! The side with the screws should be facing UP. So now my only complaint with it is that the instructions are poorly written.
I was sure mine was broken. I almost broke one of the lids off with a butter knife trying to get into it. I am so glad I did not. Once I knew what I was doing, it worked perfect. Sound, lights, talking, magicly opening boxes, the whole nine yards. This is a great little toy, the ONLY thing she got for Christmas she is still consistantly playing with. My advice, BE PATIENT!

OK, definitely, when this gets set up there is almost nothing that can top its WOW!!! factor. However, after the setup comes the "fun". First of all, the instructions say there's an "on/off button" on the back. THERE IS NOT. If your vanity does not work, try putting in the magic jewel. If that doesn't work, then check/replace the batteries AND TAKE OUT/PUT BACK IN the magic jewel. It won't turn on automatically if the jewel is already sitting in place.

Then, like everybody says, the boxes are $!&@*** difficult to open. Ironically, my husband must be the true princess in our house, b/c he's the only one who can get them open with the magic wand most of the time. He says to center the wand immediately above the icon on the box, hold it as close as you can to the icon without touching the box and you should feel the magnetic resistance between the wand and the box. He says it should feel like you're trying to push down/hover exactly on the center of this magnetic resistance. Also, on our wand, we have to make sure the wand has the sticker side facing up (my mom put it together, so I don't know if she put it on the right side). So you may want to try flipping the wand over if it still doesn't work. Even so, the 2 outer boxes always open more easily and reliably than the 2 that are closer to the center.

On the upside, this may develop your child's patience. Or not.

My daughter begged for the vanity for her fourth birthday. When we tried putting it together - the box came without screws (when instructions include them) After a trip to home depot my husband put it together. The wand does not open two of the little drawers and makes no noise when one of the other two open. You have to manuver it VERY carefully and slowly in a particular fashion (which took me over an hour to figure out) in order to open the doors. My daughter can't do it herself - she got frustrated and stopped trying. For such an expensive toy, I wish she could actually use it. My husband threw the box away the day we opened and I can't return it. If I could - I would. She will sit there and pretend to do her hair - but what she really loves (the princesses and the drawers opening) she can't do.
