MUSIC AND ANIMATION
Before Walt ventured into feature-length animation with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Disney’s original music numbers were created by sheer necessity. The studio didn’t have a library of songs to draw from like other film studios, so many of Walt Disney’s early animated works used classical music or songs available in the public domain. The studio’s first original musical hit, “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf?,” was written by Disney Legend Frank Churchill for the animated short Three Little Pigs in 1933. The song was a massive success at the time (and has since been performed by everyone from Duke Ellington to Barbra Streisand to LL Cool J), proving that audiences were as compelled by the music as they were by the animation.
As Walt was developing Snow White, he knew the story would be best presented as an animated musical feature. “I don’t think there was ever any doubt in Walt’s mind about making Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as a musical,” says Disney music historian Greg Ehrbar. “There were too many advantages to enhancing the storytelling, capturing the audience’s emotions, and carrying the popularity of the film beyond the theater.” Like many of Disney’s animated features, Snow White’s music reflected what musical styles were popular at the time, and that included the operetta. Most operettas in the 1930s were based on fairy tales, and the songs for Snow White, written by Frank Churchill and Larry Morey, embraced that aesthetic. Walt himself gave final approval over the musical numbers. In fact, it was Walt’s idea for the film to contain a song called “Some Day My Prince Will Come,” which voice actress Adriana Caselotti sang. “One of Walt’s suggestions in one of his early outlines for the movie was he thought that there really should be a song called ‘Some Day My Prince Will Come,’” explains J.B. Kaufman, author of The Fairest One of All: The Making of Walt Disney’s Snow White.
Lea Salonga records singing vocals for Mulan.
Mulan reveals her inner hopes in the song “Reflection.”

“…is a visual treat that also details the origins for the look of characters like Aurora and Ariel. It belongs on the shelf of any Disney fanatic or collector.” ―TheFilmStage.com

**It should be noted that there's some sort of manufacturing issue or something with these right now. The first one we got had a corner that was super chewed up on it. We exchanged it and the next one had a wrinkled up/ smashed spine and back. I think the manufacturer at the very least needs to put a plastic wrap around this book but maybe they need to package them in their own boxes too. Just a note to the company,

a lot of the book is historical and not really entertaining for kids so i have it shelved for now. when they're older I'm sure they will appreciate it more.
More than just a history of the princesses, it addresses their cultural impact as well, starting with a foreword by the voice of The Little Mermaid herself, Jodi Benson. It's broken up into eight chapters, which address Origins and Inspirations, Re-imaginings, Toys, Collectibles, and Games, Fashion, Music, Parks, Resorts, and Cruise Ships, Fandom, Cosplay, and Art, and Girl Power. So basically, everything :)
With a focus on the positive inspiration of all the princesses, it traces the evolution of princesses and how each were a reflection of their era. I especially enjoyed the portraits of the princesses, with an emphasis on individual character traits, showing that there indeed is no one "Disney Princess."
The big take away from this is that Disney Princesses were always culturally relevant, and continue to be today. In the end it's all really about the power of storytelling, and who does it better? With the holidays coming up I think this would be a great book for someone, like me, who has been a Disney fan all their life but is looking for a little something different than is usually presented.
Pros:
o Packed with info and photos
o Great gift for a Disney fan
Cons:
o Maybe a bit better for older Disney fans
When I saw this, I knew my little (7-year-old) Princess fanatic needed it. And upon receiving/flipping through it, it looks to be a lot more comprehensive than I was expecting, and possibly a bit over her head in parts. It contains lots of great information, and not just about the Princesses. I think for slightly older (12+) Disney or Princess-enthusiasts, it'll be a great read, or a perfect coffee table book for guests.

I'm honored to be included in the Amazon Vine program, and I work really hard to make these reviews and videos helpful. I put in a lot of effort to try to help you learn the most important facts about the product. Good luck with your decision, and if you do decide to buy the product, I hope the things you find in this review make it easier to use.

This book is full color and consists of a healthy balance between images and text (about 50/50), and contains the history of how Disney princesses rose in popularity. There are lots of movie still, production still, rough sketches from the art phase, and information about how the princess movies were inspired. There is a big focus on Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, and then moves into the late 80s/90s movies with Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, etc. The major focus are the animated movies, although there is also information about some of the live action movies, the Disney parks, and merchandise.
This is a beautiful book for Disney enthusiasts but also those who enjoyed the magic of Disney princesses growing up.
