the rich, saturated images are delightful and full of discoveries. the lyrics (really the first two verses) parsed out as they are bring a new meaning (more than i had thought of them before) to the song. it touches upon what unites us as people without being overbearing.
i find the simplest children's books tend to be some of the most profound, and i believe this falls into that category. if you are interested in mary blair, small world, art, or children's books with a message, than this is for you! i can not imagine anyone who wouldn't appreciate a copy.
and the audio cd of the song in its full glory is a welcome bonus!
I am a Disney JUNKIE so I'm probably weird in that I really enjoy the It's a Small World Ride. In fact, I even like listening to the song! But really even if you don't like listening to the song, you can still enjoy reading this book to your kids. It has a really good message and in spoken form the message comes across a lot clearer than it does on the ride- plus it doesn't get stuck in your head like the tune does!
The pages are beautifully illustrated and my kids love looking at the pictures of kids in different parts of the world. And who knows, you might pop in the CD and end up liking the song itself too! Okay well it was an added bonus for me anyway. I hear it come on and imagine myself in Fantasyland escaping the heat.
The illustrations are bright, colorful, and very nicely detailed. For me, they do a great job of evoking the look and feel of the classic Disney attraction; for my daughter, they are endlessly fascinating. Admittedly, there isn't a whole lot to the actual text: it's basically the song lyrics, minus most of the chorus. (Which makes sense: who wants to read "It's a small world after all" over and over?) But we spend more time "reading" this book together than we do many longer books, because every page contains tons of fun details to discuss, from the outfits that the adorable kids are wearing, to all of the different animals, to the scenery. The included CD is a perfect accompaniment to the book, with nearly 14 minutes of variations on the "It's a Small World" theme.
The book, like the attraction, does a good job of communicating the "small world" message without ever getting too heavy-handed, keeping it light and fun. The book and CD are both very entertaining, and can stand on their own even for those who don't have fond memories of the attraction itself.
