They Might Be Giants are like the handful of best-selling authors who also happen to be doctors or astrophysicists: They do two things so well--in their case kids' music and grown-up music--that it seems a little unfair, like the talent scale has been tipped too hard in their favor. Like Here Come the 123s, the follow-up to 2005's Here Come the ABCs, and TMBG's third kids' record. Here the Johns--Linnell and Flansburgh--are up to their usual smart shenanigans: In "Seven," a bunch of skinny numerals crash a stranger’s living room before settling in for some cake, and in "Nine Bowls of Soup" an ichthyosaur is so enamored of soup he works out a way to balance a multitude of bowls on his scaly body. The brilliance isn’t limited to the lyrics. The Johns know a thing or 1-2-3 about crafting seriously jammable music. Highights include “High Five,” a flippy, freewheeling dab of disco, and “One Everything,” a juiced-up, jangly rocker with a message for listeners ages 3 to 93: an untidy room actually is an insult to the omniverse. --Tammy La Gorce

UPDATE FROM A FEW YEARS AGO We have listened to this CD on and off for several months and just a little past three now my son is getting into it. The songs from Mickey Mouse Club House are on here and that discovery was a big hit. Much to my surprise last night my son repeated every day of the week to me in order by singing the song. This morning he asked to hear the #2 song and began listing things that came in pairs. Honestly, I was hoping to build some excitement about numbers and have something that didn't have bad content like sometimes is found on morning talk shows. The fact that it is actually teaching him something during the idle moments between home and preschool is more than I anticipated.
FINAL UPDATE: Even the best children's tunes can eventually wear out their welcome. Its been about 8 months since I dropped the CD in a puddle in a parking lot by mistake and in a hurry just left it there. My son learned about infinity in school and was very proud to know what infinity meant and came home and asked if he could bring in the infinity song from the CD to play for his friends. I guess music truly does have an infinite impact on children!
We've since gotten the CD/DVD and the DVD rarely leaves our DVD player and the CD's songs have been about the most-played songs on my iPod ever since.
These songs are clever and bouncy, and encompass a wider range of styles than TMBG used to -- High Five, One Dozen Monkeys and several other songs almost seem to be dropped in from some other (also excellent) CD. While the songs clearly have an educational value, they're still dense in the way TMBG songs often are (the very precise definition of zero, for instance, is the kind of thing that shows up in many of their songs).
There's also a great sense of play, whether it's a bunch of number 7s invading a house looking for birthday cake or a girl going bicycle riding with a monkey.
The DVD makes me long for the days when Sesame Street wasn't quite so earnest. TMBG's videos -- which surprisingly encompass a wide range of styles, instead of merely doing the same technique over and over -- are engaging and fun, and have a sort of manic feel to them that Sesame Street has really gotten away from, much to that show's detriment.
And while he hasn't yet had a wide range of musical experiments, this CD and DVD are my 10 month old son's favorite. When he's in a crabby mood, just hearing these songs played -- or watching them, silently, on my iPod -- can turn that around instantly. He's not yet able to discuss integers or even numbers, but the yarn TMBG puppets and the cutout children refusing to go to work makes his face light up every time.
This package was so solid, we're going to be picking up Here Come the ABCs next.
As with No! and ABCs, there is much here for us "grown ups" to enjoy as the kids do. From the logical One of Everything to the mature humor of Nine Bowls of Soup, my wife and I are finding us singing along with laughing at the great lyrics.
As mentioned, we have a 5 1/2 month old (as I write this). While we don't use the TV to be a "parent" to her, she just loves this DVD/CD. As soon as she hears the 123 chant from the DVD menu, she is glued to the screen. If we can't pacify her in the car, we stick on the CD and she is totally happy. It is amazing...it is good and educational music that we can feel safe for her to listen to.
To be honest, I didn't care much for The Spine and The Else as I did No, ABCs and 123s. These albums seem to harness the goofy spirit of earlier They Might Be Giants albums and I wouldn't mind seeing a few more of these albums. And so will our daughter!

If you have kids and want to listen to something better than "Baby Beluga" or "Hot Potato", this CD will make your life a happy place.
And check out "Here Come the ABC's" and "Here Comes Science".
