The Disney Tale of the Tape is easy to read, and thoughtfully created. It's not just full of Dan's opinions, instead he has many Disney media/podcasters/authors/boxing judges contribute to make fun, well informed boxing matches. Check it out!!
Now when you first get this book, my advice is to read the forward and introduction, then head straight over to the appendixes which introduces you to your judges and other notables presented in this book. If you are a big Disney fan/aficionado and follow the fan sites and podcasts or a boxing fan, you may recognize some of these names. Some of them seemed familiar to me,...for no particular reason. One of them, Henry Tafoya, was familiar as he has long been a sportscaster in Albuquerque.
Once you are familiar with some of the names and their background/expertise in their respective areas (especially the author, Dan Sisneros - quite an interesting character!), you will be better fueled to accept their reasoning and insights. Of all of the "judges" in this book, I respect Mr. Sisneros' opinion the most, he is the author afterall. He really seems to be immersed in the Disney Parks (well, he grew up practically across the street from Disneyland!) and presents an open point of view as well as enough information to pique your curiosity to check out these "attractions" yourself. I use the term "attractions" as the reviews are not just rides, but restaurants, drinks, snacks, and whatever Disney has to offer.
Now, I'm not an overzealous Disney Park fan. Heck, I haven't even been there in over 2 decades (and I used to practically live across the street! ;) ). But having never been to Walt Disney World, I was a bit curious as to how the familiar Disneyland attractions fared against the newer Disney World attractions... as well as some insight as to the altogether new rides and what to expect. This book is exactly as expected, maybe a bit better than I expected.
After reading the intro and forward, I did, indeed headed over to the appendix for a bit of insight on the contributors/judges. I'm glad I did, as it makes the experience (and it IS an experience) of reading this book much more pleasurable. I mean, I can't imagine reading it without this background knowledge.
Now remember, these are boxing matches. Mr. Sisneros has an extensive history in the Boxing field. Having been a judge, commentator and hosted his own boxing show, he knows his stuff. So with his fascination with the Disney Parks and passion for boxing, Mr. Sisneros has combined his two favorite pastimes into one solid punching book.
My experience during reading: At first I was intrigued, not knowing exactly what to expect. The first match came up... interesting... different. Then the second. As I read on, I was glad that he included not only rides, but other attractions... and he mixed them up... not giving us reviews on food in one section and a ride in another. I really enjoyed reading about something in one category for one match and then the next match was in another category. Made me feel like I was actually at a Park and experiencing these attractions. After a few bouts, I got a bit anxious and felt that the boxing format was a bit distracting. But that didn't last long. As soon as I got back to the book and the next bout, I was enjoying the entire experience just as presented. This wasn't your ordinary theme park guide, this was an adventure! Because there are three judges, there are different points of view delivered. You get some insight of the good, the bad, and the ugly... what to expect when you get there. When you read about a simple drink... you can see it, you can taste it... and you start wishing that you had a Park near you so you could hop right on over and experience it for real!
So for this person, who wasn't necessarily planning a trip, but wanted some insight as to what she was missing, this book has been a very fun and entertaining guide. I would never have purchased and read a "regular" guide... I'm not up to all that info and no entertainment value. This, however, was fully entertaining as well as insightful. Well done!
PS -This is not an all encompassing guide, but reviews some of the attractions. There are 28 attractions reviewed in this book. I hear that this is just the first of more to come! :D
This is such a unique treatment of Walt's public ventures that I can not even begin to describe the fun I had in just the reading of it!
I took several pictures of me with the book, at the park, and posted them to Dan's Facebook page relating to the book. I can't praise it enough. The funnest book I have read on Disneyland/World to date!
