From the Inside Flap
One day, not long from now, it becomes almost impossible to murder anyone - 999 times out of a thousand, anyone who is intentionally killed comes back. How? We don't know. But it changes everything: war, crime, daily life. Tony Valdez is a Dispatcher - a licensed, bonded professional whose job is to humanely dispatch those whose circumstances put them in death's crosshairs, so they can have a second chance to avoid the reaper. But when a fellow Dispatcher and former friend is apparently kidnapped, Tony learns that there are some things that are worse than death, and that some people are ready to do almost anything to avenge what they see as a wrong. It's a race against time for Valdez to find his friend before it's too late...before not even a Dispatcher can save him.

Regardless, it was a fun piece of detective noir set in an otherwise modern time period. Be forewarned, it is not a long work, more of a novella. A bit pricey for the length, but not a bad purchase.
As a long-time reader and fan of Scalzi's work, I am impressed yet again with his leaps of imagination, grasp of scene description (which takes you there, but never makes you get bored with someone who is counting the windows), and as always, his very cool and remarkable application of logical creativity to the point where the twist is suddenly applied in a forehead-slappingly obvious, but non-insulting, way. Quinto's voice is indeed a perfect path to sharing the gritty agnostic optimism of Tony and all of the supporting characters.
Sequel, more stories, anything .. please? :-)
It has an interesting premise and you don't know what it is for a while, which is a good use of tension/curiosity.
It was well written, and kept me turning pages.
The only issue I have with Scalzi's recent work is that it is all too short. He's become more of a short-story author, but I really really enjoyed his full-length books like the Old Man's War series.
