In Disrupt You!, Jay Samit, a digital media expert who has launched, grown, and sold start-ups and Fortune 500 companies alike, describes the unique method he has used to invent new markets and expand established businesses.
In today's volatile business landscape, adaptability and creativity are more crucial than ever. It is no longer possible-or even desirable-to learn one set of job skills and to work your way up the ladder. At the same time, entrepreneurs with great ideas for new products or technologies that could change the world often struggle to capture the attention of venture capital firms and incubators; finding the funding necessary to launch a start-up can feel impossible. The business leaders of our future must anticipate change to create their own opportunities for personal satisfaction and professional success.
Samit has been at the helm of businesses in the ecommerce, digital video, social media, mobile communications, and software industries, helping to navigate them through turbulent economic times and guide them through necessary transformation so that they stay ahead of the curve. In Disrupt You!, he reveals how specific strategies that help companies flourish can be applied at an individual level to help anyone can achieve success and lasting prosperity-without needing to raise funds from outside investors.
Incorporating stories from his own experience and anecdotes from other innovators and disruptive businesses-including Richard Branson, Steve Jobs, Elon Musk, YouTube, Circ du Soleil, Odor Eaters, Iams, Silly Putty, and many more-Samit shows how personal transformation can reap entrepreneurial and professional rewards. Disrupt You! offers clear and empowering advice for anyone looking to break through; for anyone with a big idea but with no idea how to apply it; and for anyone worried about being made irrelevant in an era of technological transformation. This engaging, perspective-shifting book demystifies the mechanics of disruption for individuals and businesses alike.

“If you need an acting coach, hire Russell Crowe. Throwing a football? That's easy: get help from Joe Montana. But when it comes to your next big business idea, get into the mind of Jay Samit. The "why" is obvious: he knows how to disrupt the industry you work in, right now. That's important because "disruption" is a fine art and it's easy to get wrong: ideas that are too safe get no attention; but ideas that are too big can flame out quickly. Ideas that are disruptive? They get the most funding, the best partners and the most highly qualified employees. Disrupt correctly and you'll take over the world.” ―Oren Klaff, New York Times Best-Selling Author of Pitch Anything

As Albert Einstein likes to say, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”
My favorite section of the book is near the beginning where Jay mentions seeing oneself as a brand and strategizing your personal output: “A brand of one. The links in your personal value chain constitute your unique brand. The research and development links are defined by your education, your previous work experience, and the sources you pursue to find a job in the first place. The work you do – its quality and content – makes up the design and production links. The way you present yourself professionally constitutes the marketing and sales links in your personal value chain. And where you work, with whom you work, and where you devote your professional energies determine your distribution link. Think about your professional value as the combination of these links in the chain. If you are struggling to get a job, or if you are ready to make a career transition, all you need to do is target the link ripest for disruption.”
For those looking to build personal brands, following this system would be a brilliant place to start.
Disrupt You Book Cover
Jay then walks you through the disruptors map between various other companies and their stories. Jay then shares his transformative journey of how he disrupted the music industry in a multitude of areas from branding and celebrity endorsement to the transformation of physical discs towards digital distribution. The truth of it all, is that most disruption comes from careful, methodical observation. Oftentimes a simple idea with straightforward execution is all that it takes for an idea to become a hit.
Guerilla marketing is at the core of how the music industry markets itself and Jay doesn’t skimp when it comes to sharing the strategies he has used and witnessed to success. From MTV to Sony to Apple there are valuable insights one can learn across all industries. In fact, you wouldn’t believe how starved the major publications, i.e Forbes and The Huffington Post are for fresh content every single day.
With the power of crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, open research centers and open source communities it is now literally possible to not only share your greatest ideas with like minded individuals but also work with them and collaborate on projects with complex needs. The Internet helped to disrupt information, communication, access and media. Technologies like 3D printing will disrupt basically every physical industry, while Virtual Reality will be a blend of these two. By recognizing the root of what is causing us problems and discovering the links that can connect the dots between the solutions, a disruptive entrepreneur can literally identify trends before they happen. Remember that the greatest competitive advantage of humans at the core of it all is our ability to gain knowledge and use tools and that the most valuable resource is time.

Samit isn't just dishing advice, he's backing it up with compelling success stories and industry facts.
A lot of professional development books are boring pop psychology or one step from a pyramid scheme how-to... this is fresh, inspiring insight and VERY entertaining. Jay brings some good humor and clever writing with his message.
The face of our culture, economy, and lifestyle has changed SO much since the internet and Jay really puts this all into perspective in terms of how we need to adapt to keep up.
I’m not from the corporate world, I’m a person who is unfulfilled with their career and life in general. I’ve bought hundreds of books trying to figure out how to get closer to the life I want. This is the first book with actionable steps and simple but genius tips on how to build a better life and more fulfilling career.
The way Jay weaves anecdotes, quotes, personal stories, and the stories of other successful companies and individuals keeps my attention in a way that other books have not. At a glance, one might think that this is a book about starting your own business but it’s so much more than that.
Disrupt You will wake you up out of your complacency and disrupt your acceptance of a life and career that offer you security but leave you feeling like there must be something more. This is a must read, not just for aspiring entrepreneurs, but also for any human being who is not living their best life but can’t seem to break out of a comfortable slump.
There are also free workbooks on his website you can download! So glad I found his interview on my favorite podcast Impact Theory!
"The joy of disruption comes from accepting that we all live in a temporary state."
With all the opportunities available through technologies, one may ask "where do I start?" A very logical question.
But what happens after you ask that question is most important.
ACTION!
In his book, he explains how most disruptors success stories involve the individuals pivoting their way from failures to success after many attempts. MANY!
That's right, the chances of you nailing it on the first try are slim to none. However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it or shouldn't keep trying.
It's the satisfaction one gets from solving a problem that has the most impact that makes the individual a disruptor. The ability to have a vision, problem solve by being resourceful and execute with a sense of urgency are key to developing a disruptive eye.
If you want to succeed, make sure you are ready to embrace failure and mistakes. It's meant to happen so that you can align yourself with the correct solution.
Keep trying!

His book will be of immense value to anyone who wishes to take control of their work destiny, whether as an intrapreneur (working within a company) or entrepreneur. For the intrapreneur Jay illustrates how he worked around rigid corporate cultures to introduce innovative products that customers valued. For the entrepreneur, each chapter is filled with easy actionable examples which you can apply to your own business venture, such as sourcing business funds.
I was inspired by Jay's vulnerability in revealing his own personal evolutionary challenges. When someone is so accomplished in their field, you sometimes forget that they too faced trials and tribulations, like the rest of us, to get to the top of the game.
By emulating Jay's fearless approach to personal evolution, your services will always be in demand. If you want to guarantee your livelihood no matter what the economic climate, then heed Jay's advice. He has managed to find opportunity where others failed to see the connections.
If you enjoy reading about how you might come to attain great wealth by utilising what abilities you currently possess, then buy this book.
Jay's unique expression of viewing your life as a value supply chain is pivotal for the re-invention of one's self as well as your business. This book shows you how to create and leverage your personal brand to open doors that were previously shut.
Finally, if you want to learn how to find your next big opportunity, buy this book!

Gives you such a good view on your ideas and how you could be using them in a way that will not only create a great business, but help people at the same time! its a win win!
will never lend this book to anyone...reason... as i will use as a reference book at least weekly...

I highly recommend this book to anyone, who is interested in self development in general.
