Kirkus Reviews Best Nonfiction Book of the Year
Neave Book Prize shortlist

Al Qaeda did not stop after 9/11. Its reign of terror continued with bombings and mayhem across Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. But its frustration grew as the group failed to fundamentally undermine America and its allies.

Five years later the time was ripe for another spectacular mega-plot. Fresh from masterminding the London Underground carnage, one veteran operative set in motion a new operation to destroy passenger aircraft over the Atlantic Ocean—and kill thousands of people in the process.

Disruption tells the story of that conspiracy and the heroic efforts by the intelligence services of the United States, Great Britain, and Pakistan to uncover and crush it. From the streets of London to the training camps of Pakistan to the corridors of power in Washington DC, the story unfolds with murders, double-crosses, probes, jailbreaks, and explosions.

Former counterterrorism analyst Aki J. Peritz brings the story to life with vivid imagery, interviews with top intelligence officials, and never-before-seen declassified documents.
Disruption is the not-to-be-missed account of the race to stop a terrorist conspiracy that would have remade our world—forever.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“[A] gripping account of a complex and ultimately successful counterterrorism investigation.”—Lawrence D. Freedman, Foreign Affairs

"Some of the measures put in place since 9/11, as inconvenient as they may be, have undoubtedly saved lives. We might still debate their usefulness and legality, but we should do so with a full understanding of their results.
Disruption is a valuable contribution to that understanding."—Samuel Sweeney, Wall Street Journal Published On: 2022-01-10

"An outstanding contribution to the literature of terrorism and counterterrorism. "—
Kirkus Reviews, starred

"Readers will gain new appreciation for what it takes to stop the next terrorist attack."—
Publishers Weekly Published On: 2021-09-28

"In the summer of 2006, the British security services, with the assistance of the CIA, foiled what would have been the most devastating terrorist attack since 9/11: an al-Qaida plot to detonate bombs on seven transatlantic commercial flights, which would have resulted in over 3,000 deaths.
Disruption is Peritz's meticulous, fascinating history of this plot, from the radicalization of the perpetrators to their sentencing in a British courtroom."—Christian Science Monitor Published On: 2021-12-07

“A fascinating read. There are secrets in this book even I didn’t know.”—Gen. Michael V. Hayden, U.S. Air Force (Ret.), former director of the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency

“This operation remains the gold standard for how America and Great Britain came together to crush the greatest conspiracy since 9/11.
Disruption knocks it out of the park.”—Fran Townsend, assistant to the president for Homeland Security and Counterterrorism

Disruption is a deeply researched and reported examination of a plot by largely Britain-based al Qa’ida supporters who hoped to put suicide bombers on at least a half dozen tarns-Atlantic flights in 2006. . . . The best part of the story is the extraordinary detail [Peritz] provides on what the U.K. dubbed ‘Operation Overt.’ . . . Disruption is full of hard to believe (but true) stories.”—Bill Harlow, The Cipher Brief

"
Disruption is an engrossing page-turner."—David Luhrssen, Shepherd Express Published On: 2022-01-06

this book, while non-fiction, is so well-written that it reads like the best novel. it is sad that all these things actually happened but the author peppers the truth with humor and sharp insights. it is filled with paragraphs like this gem "they had fire in their guts but their delicate internal plumbing wasn't' up to the task. Khan and his friend were struck down with bowel-shattering diarrhea. plus the Taliban fighters - hardened sinewy men with gimlet eyes - thought these English men with their soft hands and fat complexions were too physically weak to make it very far". so very funny!!! the pace is quick and i was amazed at all the facts and the level of detail that the writer was able to pack in. i would love to see this be a mini series on netflix because the author would do such a good job of translating this to an even bigger audience who deserves to know about the world we live in and what almost happened to all of us.

This type of book isn't normally what I read but I saw an article with the first couple chapters and found it interesting. I then saw the price and didn't want to pay that much but got a sample through Amazon anyway. The sample was intense and riveting; halfway through it, I went back and bought the book. I haven't moved in the past few hours reading it. I can't put it down and HIGHLY recommend it.

Remember when they first banned bringing water bottles from home onto planes? This book tells us why — of the terrorist plot (starting in Pakistan) that tried to blow up a dozen planes over the Atlantic Ocean using explosive liquids smuggled onboard planes. The story reads like fiction, but incredibly it’s all true (there are ten pages of references/ footnotes in the back?). Would highly recommend.

This book was fantastic, and I could not put it down. The author painstakingly details how the British and Americans worked together to take down a major terrorist plot, and, although it is all true, it reads like a spy/thriller novel. Once you start this book, you won't be able to stop. It's a great story, and it's so well written.

I read this book over the Holidays and I pulled an all-nighter devouring Mr. Peritz's book. This is one of the best nonfiction books I have read in a long time. It reads like an edge-of-the-seat spy / political thriller...because it is. There was not a single superfluous word in this book. I found very fascinating the details of the investigation and the dynamics between the CIA and MI6, the history, and the context. I highly recommend Disruption.

The author states that the book started as an article and grew to be a book. It feels that way. I grew to be confused or wait for a payoff much earlier than it occurs. I would have recommended restructuring the story to make it more into a nonfiction book rather than a magazine article.

Aki Peritz does an excellent job bringing us into the minds of the many individuals involved in preventing a terrorist attack that would have killed thousands. This book is gripping and psychologically interesting and shows an impressive breadth of insider knowledge.
