- Reviewed in the United States on February 11, 2011Hi all,
Dr. Miller's book, Finish Your Dissertation Once and for all is a book that I will cherish for a long time! Dr. Miller discusses with candor the common psychological problems many students face when writing an academic paper. Dr. Miller's book has taught me how to turn academic papers into manageable chunks. Dr. Miller's book has helped me understand that creating workplans for academic papers help overcome psychological barriers. Dr. Miller's book also taught me that trying to write papers as if your committee members and advisor makes writing hell. Dr. Miller's book expressed the importance of getting your thoughts on paper first, even if these thoughts are crappy. Dr. Miller stated that after your thoughts are on paper, the student can go back and refine the paper. Essentially, Dr. Miller's book has made writing academic papers more enjoyable for me. This book is must have for students entering a graduate degree program and doctoral degree program.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2013This book is exactly the kind of book I was hoping to find on dissertation writing.
It contains a lot of things that, even as an avid self-help reader like me, weren't common sense.
It was very useful and clear (crystal clear) and it contains just the exact amount of exercises, examples and stories.
The book contains advice on writing, on feeling about your dissertation and it really makes you move on and feel good about it.
I'm sure it's not exactly original, but it helped me as no other book on dissertations had.
I'm finally working on my dissertation instead of doing everything else.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2013This is by far the best dissertation book I have ever read! I have read a lot of books relating to the dissertation process. This is the first book to actually tell you why you don't want to write no matter how much you try and why you have not graduated yet. Plus this book shows you step by step on how to psychologically deal with the dissertation process and finally crossing the stage. A easy and great read! Must read for anyone in a doctoral program. This book will save you from struggling so much!
- Reviewed in the United States on September 6, 2016Good nuts and bolts guide. Generic enough to work for the requirements of different PhD programs but specific enough to be of great use. All doctoral candidates hit a wall in writing the dissertation. This wall may be in the early stages of finding the research question, or during the data gathering, or interpreting the data, or starting with first word on the first page, or after the first draft review.
Committees are composed of PhD professors, all who think of themselves as God. When a candidate knows that every word is going to be dissected, that each committee member is going to want changes made (often running counter to each other), and the candidate is under considerable pressure to get the dissertation done in an established period of time, the candidate hits that wall with the force of a dump truck.
Books like this one, and especially this one, are great for getting back the momentum and pushing on.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2014This book was so right on time. There were so many moments when I thought she had been following me and knew my exact life. I feel so much more motivated and confident to complete my dissertation. My only regret is that I did not buy this book sooner. I wish I had it before my proposal writing or even in the earlier stages of writing my dissertation. Nonetheless, I am thankful for coming across this book and have a new energy that I might actually be able to complete my dissertation.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 9, 2022Definitely recommend for my fellow grad students!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 20, 2013I found this book really helpful in how I can approach my dissertation and have successful outcomes. I have been able to identify my barriers to completing my dissertation and have begun following her advice and making the changes to be successful. This book doesn't make the work involved in a dissertation easier, but I am now able to manage myself and my time better. I have a more positive attitude about the process and no longer feel hopeless. Worthwhile investment.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2013Along with the support website, PhinisheD.org, where I found out about this book, it has been absolutely critical in turning my endless puttering into real progress toward my PhD. I have been my own worst enemy all along, and knew that, but didn't know how to turn it around until I read this. So helpful, both mentally/emotionally and practically. Wish I would have read it years ago. Should be required reading after passing quals!

This book was my lifeline for the past couple of years. This is definitely the best dissertation-related book I read.
AntoinetteReviewed in the United Kingdom on June 13, 20155.0 out of 5 stars Like having a personal coach
I bought three books on getting through the PhD/writing your thesis and this is far and away the best because it is the only one that deals openly and honestly with the sort of problems so many students face along the way, the real, psychological reasons behind them and then gives effective strategies to conquer them. When you are having difficulties with your thesis you tend to blame yourself and often don't want to admit it to your supervisors or peers because you don't want to be seen as a failure or stupid/lazy etc. In my experience other PhD students are rarely completely open about the problems they are experiencing because the atmosphere in academia is so competitive and they feel they have to maintain a facade of success. The author is speaking from personal experience - part of what makes this so helpful - and her writing style is engaging and human. She makes it clear from the start that if you're stuck and think there is no way out a) you're not alone and b) there is a way forward. If you're struggling at all with writing your thesis - lack of confidence or motivation, if you're procrastinating, if you have difficult supervisors, if you've been doing it for years and think you'll never finish, if you feel like you just want to give up, DON'T: read this book instead. It will teach you how to be kind to yourself throughout the process, how to gain confidence and a more positive outlook, how to plan and work efficiently and most importantly how to finish it 'Once and for All'.
