Review

"[The] characters aren't only loveable, but they're realistic, too - they're people you'd want to know in real life." -- Sherri Shepherd, actress, co-host "The View," and card-carrying boy band lover

About the Author

Mel Henry has been an avid reader since stealing her first Harlequin from her mom's nightstand in second grade. Because some words were too big for her seven-year-old vocabulary, she took to writing her own stories (much to the relief of her teacher) and has been doing so ever since.

After having held various jobs in her life that brought her no satisfaction and only a piddly income, she decided to publish her first book. She figured being a starving artist instead of just starving sounded much more interesting. Being able to do it in her pajamas and without make-up are just perks to the job.

Living in Iowa with her husband and two teenaged daughters, Mel's an avid cook (sometimes by choice), seasoned traveler (always by choice), and a hardcore warrior against chronic Lyme disease (definitely not by choice). She loves live theater, thunderstorms, and good tea. She loathes conspiracy theories, egotistical people, and sushi.

She is currently collaborating with three other authors on a project, and has the foundation in place for her next series. In the meantime, you can find her current works on Amazon and other online booksellers.

Buy one for yourself, buy one and give it as a gift. This story needs to be shared with the masses. A fantastic read that encapsulates a very heartfelt love story of how "girl meets boy", in a way that happens only once in a lifetime, giving way to the hope that crazy dreams coming true is indeed possible. A story that breathes life into such realistic characters, you cannot help but want for more.

This is a debut novel and I have to say I enjoyed it.

The story begins in 2003, when Carly is heading back home for her 10 year High school reunion.

As she travels back she flashes back to her high school years.

Carly - the average teenage girl, who just wants to go as far from home when college comes. She lives with her mother, who is a pushover, and an overbearing step father. She is the teenager we all remember being, posters of the latest and greatest boy band on our wall. For Carly it was the South Station Boyz. She was infatuated with Josh, the lead singer of the band.

She talks her mom and step dad into letting her go to Chicago for the weekend to look at a college. While there, she makes friends and they talk her into going to the clubs for the night and low and behold she has a chance meeting with Josh. I know, I know, you are thinking, please, a pop star falls in love with a “regular” girl. But this book was so much more than that.

Josh was a nice guy, he just danced with Carly, talked to Carly, enjoyed her company. And yes, their weekend together is a whirlwind, but there was no BDSM, crazy sex, or drugs. Just some innocent time together and maybe a kiss or two. It was refreshing. To read a book that showed us the innocence of teenage infatuation and love.

We follow their relationship through the years and watch as they grow and even grow apart. The metamorphosis of their friendship, love affair and life is beautiful to watch. This book is a refreshing change to many books on the market today. There is no bdsm, no alpha male, (yes there is a rock star but he’s not really a jerk) and it was so nice to read this sweet story about real life.

I always enjoy an epilogue that brings everything full circle. Beautiful debut novel! 3.5 stars

Great story that kept my attention throughout. I didn't want to put it down but my 8 year old, 10 year old and my husband were demanding meals and stuff. :) Carly is a great character that could be a friend of mine. Her relationships and experiences are relatable and interesting to share. Trey is a great guy who any woman would be thrilled to date, the perfect guy to help Carly. Josh was a fantastic first love interest. Can't wait for the second book and share more of their lives. Thanks Mel for writing an enjoyable summer read.

This is a lovely love story. The characters are loveable and their traits are well described. But -- when people love each as much as these two do I found it disturbing that they were more concerned about themselves than they were about each other. I found the ending disappointing.

Do you remember those days (if you were raised in the 80’s) where you would sit in front of the TV watching MTV just praying for the singer who stole your heart would come on the screen and sing just to you? That one person in a band that made your heart go wild? Lying in bed at night, dreaming of what it would be like to be the Mrs. to that sexy singer? Well Mel Henry gave us the reality to that dream in this book.

Carly Cooper came face to face with the man of her dreams when she saw Josh McCarthy singing on stage. She was 18 and the sparks flew quickly between them the moment their eyes met. Going forward with her dream she began to believe that they would have a happily ever after, but she failed to realize she will be sharing this man with the thousands of other girls who believe they have the same chemistry as she does, they just need that chance with Josh.

His band is gone a lot on tours, he lives in East, she is a Midwest girl, distance and time is going to be an issue for them but what he feels is real for her. Two young people, living in a world with demanding commitments, they don’t have an easy road. Eventually they drift apart, the calls stop, the visits stop and soon the memories of those few months are all they have.

Fast forward a few years and they meet again. This time they have more maturity, success and careers set to base a relationship on. Instead of time and distance being the obstacle, they now have dedication to their career dreams. Love for their jobs, love for each other will only keep them together OR drive them apart.
A major event happens to Carly that will leave her a different person but during that event Trey comes into the picture. Will she give up her dream with Josh for reality with Trey?

I purchased four paperbacks, with three as gifts for family members and wondered what the reactions would be. I was pleasantly surprised that not only did they like it, they couldn't wait for book two to be released. Thank to Mel Henry for making this Dad/Husband a Rock Star!

Carlene Cooper was your average teenager. Average, that is, except for her relationship with Josh McCarthy, member of teen mega-group, South Station Boyz. Young love blossomed at a chance meeting when Carly was a senior in high school and Josh was just discovering what stardom really meant. Despite their chemistry, it was no surprise to anyone when their very different lives took very different paths a few months down the road. Years later, their paths cross again, and they must decide if the spark they felt back then is strong enough to rekindle. Josh has built a name for himself in show business, but Carly, too, has planted roots as a journalist in New York City.

Will they be able to successfully merge their lives and overcome the obstacles that drove them apart a decade earlier? Just as she comes to the decision that will change their lives one way or the other, Detective Trey Foster enters her life unexpectedly, and Carly is faced with another choice. Will she choose the man she's spent her whole life loving, or will she push it aside for a chance at happiness out of the spotlight?

*I really enjoyed this story. It sure didn’t end like I expected it to. I really like it when books don’t end like you think they will. The entire time I read this book I thought I knew what was going to happen but I was way off.

I really liked Josh and Carlene together. They made a great couple. Everything that happened in this book happens to your regular everyday people all the time. I liked how real the characters seemed. I felt like I could walk out of my house and meet a Carlene Cooper on the streets. Those are my favorite characters. Mel Henry has a new fan right here. Her writing is amazing. The book was fast paced and I could believe it was over when I hit the last page.
