Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

After a missile "accident" results in the deaths of several tourists, Hawaiian native and dolphin researcher Kaia Oana is enlisted to help the U.S. Navy determine whether the tragedy was an accident or something more sinister. When she teams up with naval security chief Jesse Matthews, readers will rightly suspect that the angry sparks that fly in their first meeting will eventually be replaced by embers of a more romantic kind. Several of the characters in this suspense novel are stubbornly two-dimensional, including the villain, and the book's faith element often feels tacked on via platitudes rather than integrated with the plot and the characters. On the other hand, the pacing is strong and consistent, with the suspense building slowly and clues being dangled at key points throughout. The real winner here is the Hawaiian setting, with Coble weaving welcome elements of traditional culture and language into the story. (May 12)

Review

'In Distant Echoes, Colleen Coble paints a picture of Hawaii that is as real as the characters she breathes to life. Rich detail, realistic romance, and you'll-never-guess suspense make this a story you won't want to put down until the last page.' --Denise Hunter, author of Saving Grace

'Colleen Coble has concocted a tangy whodunit and spiced it up with just the right amount of romance, intrigue, inspiration, and a generous splash of spine-tingling suspense. Sit back, put your feet up, and try to sip it slowly-if you can! Aloha!' --Kathy Herman, author of the Baxter Series and Poor Mrs.Rigsby

'This story of restoration steeped in Hawaiian tradition and culture will make you want to pack you bags and head for the islands. Aloha, baby!' --Stephanie Grace Whitson, author of A Garden In Paris --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Sink your teeth into a piece of ripe, juicy mango and inhale its fragrance as you meander through the monkeypod trees. Step out across sun-kissed sand and into the turquoise waves. Feel the nostrum of a dolphin bump your leg, begging you to come play. Take hold of the offered fin, and savor the ride as she leads you out into deeper waters.

No, you haven't entered a travel brochure. Allow me to introduce you to Colleen Coble's exotic new Hawaiian series, Aloha Reef.

In the opening chapters of book one, Distant Echoes, dolphin researcher Kaia Oana and her brothers are enjoying a typical day on the water. Her brothers fish as Kaia swims with Nani, one of the bottle-nosed dolphins she is teaching to communicate.

Then, as they prepare to head back to shore, disaster strikes. An errant missile sweeps past them and hits a tourist boat. Kaia and her brothers race to rescue survivors from the water as a military vessel hurries to the scene. Fatalities are few, but one casualty brings the tragedy close to home for Kaia and her family.

Lieutenant Commander Jesse Matthews watches the scene from his military vessel. Testing of the new missile defense system failed. But was it just a computer error? A witness on the tour boat claims the missile came straight at them, as if they were the target. And a recent break-in at the naval base raises the question: Was this just an accident, or did someone tamper with the missile system?

The security of the naval base is Jesse's main concern. He enlists Kaia and her dolphin to help protect the naval base waters after break-ins continue at the compound. But when stolen missile secrets turn up in Jesse's house, he and Kaia have no option but to continue the investigation on their own.

In Distant Echoes, the first in Colleen Coble's newest Aloha series, the writing blew me away! I was pulled into the story from the opening line and was not able to put the book down until I'd read the last word! The characters were so well-written, I felt as if I really knew them...the plot was perfectly paced, and packed with suspense! My highest recommendation! If you get one book this summer, spend your time with the characters in Distant Echoes!!! Don't miss this excellent book!

As a life long Hawaii resident I can only apperciate the amount of research it took Colleen Coble to recreate that which is uniquely Hawaii. From the first page it was a sophisticated weaving of the familial, political, and spiritual wrapped up in a romantic suspense which makes Colleen such a sophisticated writer. She nailed all that makes Hawaii such a melting pot of different cultures. Colleen's use of Nani the dolphin is so lifelike the dolphin seems to be a character in herself. I would highly recommend this book to anybody who loves a good read or interested in knowing more about Hawaii and its unique culture.

This book really touched me. I have been to Hawaii several times, including Kauai twice, so I am familiar with the names and places. I actually stayed at Barking Sands on one of my visits. This book brought tears to my eyes with the emotions of the characters. Also very exciting I could not put it down. Thanks for putting some of the Hawaiian words at the end, for those who did not know them as I did. Will be sure to read more by Colleen Coble, especially the Aloha series. The Hawaiian people have a spirit of Aloha that is wonderful and I'm so glad the Colleen grasped that and expressed that in her writing. I also appreciated the reminders that we must depend on God our fatter, and how important forgiveness is.

Distant Echoes wraps you into a world of espionage, intrigue, and love set in the tropical paradise of Hawaii where the native culture conflicts with the Navy presence.

Colleen Coble creates characters you can love including a dolphin that nearly steals the show. These characters struggle with political and social issues while at the same time worrying about their own jobs and families. Once I got started I could not set it down. I suggest reading this book in the morning.

The writing and the imagery were nice in this book. You definitely felt as if you could visualize Hawaii and the events that took place. I was able to finish the book despite the fact that I didn't feel deeply intwined with the plot. I think I become a bit addicted to stories that I just can't put down and anything less becomes a bit disappointing. There was some action and romance in the book but it felt almost as if it was written more as a young adult series than anything. It was more of a "feel good" sort of story. Also, I tend to dislike when an author seems as if they are pushing a bit of religious ideaology on a reader by suffusing a story line with it and this book qualifies as falling into that category. It's not a bad read if there isn't anything else to capture your attention but I don't think I'll be reading any other Colleen Coble books.
