I remember how hard it was to convince my grandfather to write this book. I’m so grateful to Jerry for his diligence in getting Joe to say yes.Joe never liked to talk about his time as a POW, and I’m sure he came home with PTSD (Who wouldn’t?!?!) even though that diagnosis didn’t exist at the time. He often said there were things that happened to him during the war that he would take to his grave because they were so awful he didn’t want to share them, and he ended up doing exactly that.Every once in a while, I come to this page and read these reviews to remind me of my grandfather, and it’s touching that many of you have found his words valuable.I’ve been watching Masters of The Air on Apple TV lately, and it reminds me so much of what Joe went through that I need to pick up his book again. I miss him now that he’s gone, yet I’m grateful I have A Distant Prayer to remember him by.

This was a very inspiring book that gave us such great insight into the horror of World War II but also gave many inspiring messages throughout to help you get through the horrible parts of the war. Such a great book! I am buying many to give to others I know because I love it so much. My Grandpa wouldn't talk about his experiences in the war as a Radio Operator of the very same plane that this man flew in, so to here a personal account is wonderful, to understand a little more about what they went through, but this book is a lot lighter reading than the many books I have read previously. So nice because it is harder to read the accounts of the Jewish people these days. Very inspiring to go through such things but to still see the good also.

This book was a pleasant surprise. It is a well told account of a World War II B-17 bomber crewman flying out of Italy. His bomber group was suffering a very high attrition rate due to aerial combat injuries and fatalities while flying bombing raids into Nazi-held territories. The surprising, heart-warming and redeeming qualities in the narrative come from one man's spiritual strivings and emerging enlightenment as he heals from the traumas he experiences over the trajectory of the story. It's a short book but inspiring and fulfilling.

I would bet that any war veteran has some good stories to tell. This is a great war story. Not to give too much away but any one who has survived being bombed by another airplane in their own flight group has a story worth hearing. Just the part about the fall to the ground is worth the price of the book. But spectacular events aside it's worth knowing that people like this exist. Get to know some truly fine people, read "A Distant Prayer".
