Krakauer ... Bryson ... Doneen?
The Divide delivers-adventure, fear, inspiration-deep introspection and affirmation that good people do still exist, particularly off the beaten path. Doneen has a talent for description, alternately leaving the reader cold and vaulting spirits up; evoking grief... The Divide is a beautifully executed entry into the world of non-fiction adventure.
A Journey Within a Journey
Flat out excellent reading, whether you are a biker or not. Nathan is equally adept describing lands and the people who roam over them. Hated reaching the last page.
For Every Adventurer
This book is for those that are seeking adventure and dream of a life that only few get to experience. Nathan's honest experiences draw you in and keep you captivated.

Yea, I've read books by hikers of the three main trails PCT, CDT, APT, those are very interesting filled with adventure, the bike racing ones are good to a certain point , but speeding through the states are not my idea of fun , but they are adventurous and hurry up and go fast as you can , This book is a horse of a different color adventurous, learning to ask for directions, and dealing with figuring out why you don't always have to follow the red line, The insightful thoughts are worth contemplating . I liked the descriptions of the land and the people he met. The ending maybe a surprise or maybe not. Nice book hopefully he keeps writing.

"The Divide" surprised me. First surprise, the author is from Washington and went to college in Cheney. Second surprise, it was an easy read. But the biggest surprise was the ride itself. I had not heard of this particular race or even the trek. Nathan started his journey as a neophyte and ended a seasoned writer. The underlying theme of this book is the search for identity and one's place in this world. His insights touched me deeply. Finding oneself can be a daunting task and Nathan discovered who he was, what his limits were, and the consequences of his choices. Following "the red line" isn't always the best path to follow. Sometimes the alternate way becomes far more productive.
I will highly recommend this book to all my associates. In some ways, this book reminds me of "The Boys in the Boat" because of the self discovery aspect.

The author writes well presenting an interwoven tale of riding the Divide. He neither presents too much detail nor writes with arrogant self-absorption - the tone that some cycling tourists use. He seems to be a writer first and a story-teller second. As a road tourer, mountain biker and gravel grinder, I was immersed in his descriptions, experiences and thoughts. There was little mechanical discussion, no description of what is needed, etc. This is truly a story with a philosophical bent. Consider it a Zen and Art of Motorcycle Maintenance lite. Further, this helped me through a difficult mental recovery. I picked it up as I am planning to ride the trail in segments. It was better than I had expected. I recommend the book for those who dream to do this, who need an escape, who enjoys fine writing.

I read this book for several reasons. One is that I've never mountain biked or ridden off road. I've done some serious riding when I became older but, always road miles. Reason two was to see what you'd encounter and what it would be like riding the Great Divide. Finally the book has good reviews and it let me experience another type of riding to some degree.
The book is well written. However, like 95% of cycling books the writer tends to express his ride as if he's the first or only one to do it. Like many cyclists they believe their experiences are more difficult or unusual than anybody else's. I'm also not sure why Nathan keeps spending a chapter talking about when he was in college. Of course I didn't have the luxury of going to school and not finding work immediately.

Thanks Nathan. Although its been a quarter century since my own epic adventure (sailing) your superb tome reminded me of why we leave and what we learn. Trying to remember what we learned is the follow up journey as life gets in the way, once again. Your book has inspired this old man to consider one last adventure. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get lost in their own possibilities.

This book was entertaining and very enjoyable. I loved the blow by blow details of the ride, and also the tales of people met along the way.
I love to ride my bike, so was super curious as to what bike he was riding and his set up, but maybe you can’t mention brand names.
I do know that I am going to try s’mores poptarts😁

This was a good read. I usually enjoy books written by through hikers of either the AT or PCT, but this was nice for a change. The author did a good job of moving the story along and still relating some interesting observations and interactions with fellow riders and hikers on the Continental Divide trail. I recommend this book for anyone interested in getting an idea of what an adventure like this would be like.

This is a great review of the Tour Divide - and the mindset that is required to finish the Race. Such a long journey requires as much mental preparation as physical. The author shares his personal story to put this in perspective. While others complained about this personal background, it would otherwise be a sterile race recap.

What a brilliant book! I've read every tour divide book in the run up to tackling it myself, this is the first one I've read since i got back. I relived so much of my trip and trials and tribulations. An awesome read, get out there and have a go yourself, if this doesn't inspire you, nothing will. The hardest part of getting to the start, after that you just turn the pedals. Follow Nathan's most important point too, don't feel you have to stick to the red line, it's your adventure!!

The divide is thoroughly entertaining and superbly written. When finished I searched for more books written by Nathan and will certainly follow this Author as and when he publishes more books.
