Divided Knowledge: Van Til & Traditional Apologetics Paperback – December 22, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
A collection of essays critical of the apologetics school of Cornelius Van Til, Without Excuse: Scripture, Reason, and Presuppositional Apologetics, edited by David Haines, calls for the return of traditional apologetics. Some of the authors prefer Thomism, as found in the era of Reformed Scholasticism. The essays examining the view of reason held by Van Til and by some of his successors, especially John Frame and Greg Bahnsen, are analyzed.
Contrary to what both sides of the debate suppose, Thomism and Van Til’s presuppositionalism are the two temporal poles of a single tradition, one that separates knowledge into an absolute archetypical knowledge belonging to God and an analogy of unknown reliability for man. Along with this is an attempt to make this absolute knowledge determine the action of God in the world.
The adequacy of the understanding of Van Til’s system and philosophical influences in these essays is also explored. Equal scrutiny is given to presuppositionalism and to the Neo-Calvinist intellectual tradition behind it. A different explanation of how Van Til’s presuppositionalism fails is offered, as well as a proposal for a better explanation of what is wrong with the philosophical traditions.
The alternatives to the foundationalist and philosophical apologetics traditions is a second topic. Beyond the soundness of the philosophical systems employed in apologetics is a more basic need to consider how real people form and hold their beliefs, and whether apologetics, as taught in the schools, is particularly useful.
Two appendixes cover the understanding of natural law in Without Excuse, in the light of the late medieval natural law traditions, and the rejection of Thomism by Neo-Calvinist philosophy.
