This book is a prime example of how left wing academics rationalize the failure of western workers to flock to their banner. Since workers in the west refuse elevate these would be apparatchiks to power, these ivory tower intellectuals must struggle to find fault within the workers of the west. In this case the author attempts to blame western workers for the exploitation of workers in the underdeveloped countries. I'd like to watch him explain this to a second tier part time auto worker in Kentucky.
Since workers everywhere are exploited by the same capitalist class, the actual answer is to recognize the bonds of workers around the globe. This international working class must unite in struggle to liberate itself in an international revolutionary wave to the end exploitation everywhere. Or as Marx put it: "workers of the world unite!"

Editorial Reviews
Review
Dr. Cope presents a thought provoking study of the political economy of the world system by focusing on the concept of a global labour aristocracy. Within the world system, which has also been described as a global apartheid system by some, enormous differences exist between workers' wages and living conditions, depending on where the workers are located. The author details how a global labour aristocracy in core countries benefits at the expense of workers in periphery countries. The mechanisms supporting such a situation are identified as exploitation, imperialism and racism. The book is a valuable contribution to globalization critique." -- Gernot Köhler, Professor, Sheridan College and author of The Global Wage System: A Study of International Wage Differences and Global Economics
