However, I feel compelled to write this review because this paperback edition is so horribly bound. The binding cracks and the pages start to fall out under even the most gentle use. This is a big problem because you will want to read this book every day for the rest of your life. Please do not buy this paperback edition. Buy the leather bound edition: http://www.amazon.com/Divine-Intimacy-Gabriel-Magdalen-O-C-D/dp/1905574436 Yes it costs a little more but it is more than worth it.
Unfortunately the book was compiled shortly before the calendar changes following the second vatican council, so it no longer perfectly aligns with all the feast days and observances, and is missing some modern additions like divine mercy sunday. Also the Sunday meditations don't follow the modern lectionary. You can find a good calendar plan to figure out which lesson to read for which day online. One such resource can be found at divineintimacy.larmour.us
Despite the slight calendar changes, this volume is nevertheless a very relevant and valuable resource for people truly wishing to grow in the interior life.
Father Gabriel of St Mary Magdalen, a Carmelite friar and the author of this series of meditations, was a student of Father Lagrange who took the finely crafted examination of the entirety of the Catholic faith of Saint Thomas, and, with the help of a whole convent of Carmelite nuns, created a large book of meditations on the most essential truths, to be used for daily contemplative prayer and growth in the spiritual life.
This resulting book is a remarkable tool of apologetics and devotion, intellectual understanding and spiritual fervor, for here is the result of a combination of the strength of the Dominicans, who are noted for their exemplary preaching, eloquence and philosophy and the strength of the Carmelites, noted prayer warriors, marked by their sanctity, fervor and total devotion to God.
Each entry begins with a brief ejaculatory prayer meant to place one in a deeper awareness of the presence of God. This is followed by 2 meditations on the given subject, which is loosely related to the older (pre-Vatican II) Catholic calendar of daily Scriptural readings. The meditations are concluded with an inspired prayer, frequently one penned by a Carmelite Saint, such as Teresa of Avila, Saint John of the Cross, Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity or Saint Therese or a Dominican such as Saint Catherine of Sienna, Saint Dominic or Saint Thomas Aquinas.
I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
Really pleased with my purchase,,,,,this book was first published, over forty years ago,,,but like most catholic books,,the older, the better, the surer the theology,,,,,,keeping the faith was a whole lot easier back then,,,,then you knew you were CATHOLIC ,,,,,,not wishy-washy dilutions......think I'm turning into a grumpy old man???
