Enlil-Bani was a real person who lived in Sumeria about 1860 B.C.E. In that time, if soothsayers predicted that a calamity was to befall the king, a substitute was chosen. At the end of the day, the substitute was killed, and the gods satisfied. In this case, however, Enlil-Bani is known to have escaped his fate and gone on to reign for another twenty-four years.
This is his story and the story of his family. The amount of research that went into the writing of this tale is evident throughout, and one gets a real feel for the life and times of people living in that era. The various story lines weave effortlessly around each other. The characters are fleshed out perfectly, and the reader gets the feeling that the author has been granted some sort of second-sight into their lives.
A real page-turner, you'll be both satisfied at the ending, and panting for the sequel. Get to writing, Mr. Dupont! I'm ready for more!
