Now my daughter is going through a divorce. Her husband's attorney is really playing dirty. I bought this book for her to use. Since reading it she has turned the situation around. She has and still is playing fair, however, now she understands how to deal with the more vicious aspects of this attorney's bag of tricks.
There is quite a bit about child custody here. Although that’s not an issue in my situation, even those discussions shed light on the process and helped me think creatively about my situation. So if you do get the book (get the book!) read it cover to cover. Every page has a useful insight into the process or a compelling suggestion on strategy. I have a very good lawyer, but I really learned so much from this book (it’s also way way way cheaper than an hour with your lawyer). Just because you know a subject from the inside out, doesn’t mean you can describe it well to those looking in. But Levine is a graceful writer. With his authoritative grasp of his home turf, he guides us into the belly of the beast. Like the best tour guides, he offers not only specific facts but also evokes the whole of the world, its black holes and its escape routes.
I also really appreciated his principled stance. I know, what am I saying, principled--c'mon, we’re talking about a divorce lawyer here! Perhaps I was just snowed, as I allowed myself to be with my ex (don’t get me started). But I do think Levine has a real, beating heart.
