Published in December 1947, “To Secure These Rights” was a report from President Harry S. Truman’s Committee on Civil Rights. One political commentator called it “the most mischievous document published since the Communist Manifesto.” Nevertheless, President Truman spent the subsequent years pushing Congress to pass civil rights legislation. However, Conservative Democrats from the once Confederate States saw Truman’s push for equality as a betrayal.

In 1948, the Southern Democrats bolted from the Democratic Party and began a third party, the Dixiecrats. Their 1948 campaign was unsuccessful, but the Dixiecrats had an unyielding dedication to white supremacy. Northern Liberal Democrats sided with President Truman on civil rights, which drove a wedge between the Conservative and Liberal wings of the Democratic Party.

Simultaneously, the Liberal and Conservative factions of the Republican Party experienced infighting and an ideological split over labor, specifically the Taft-Hartley Act.

Initially driven by a hatred for President Truman, Conservative Democrats (Dixiecrats) and Conservative Republicans teamed up in Congress to pass or block legislation beneficial to each one. Conservative Republicans helped the Dixiecrats block civil rights bills, and in return, the Dixiecrats helped Conservative GOP members stop pro-union bills.

The unholy union between the Conservatives of both parties became known as the Dixiecrat-Republican Coalition, sometimes called the “Dixiegops” in newspapers. The Coalition lasted for decades, through multiple presidents, and had long-lasting repercussions in American politics.

Dixiegops is the story of how Conservative Democrats and Conservative Republicans teamed up to block civil rights and unions for decades.

I found this book thorough and I definitely enjoyed it. Even if you’re not a history buff, there are so many Easter eggs in this book about events that happened in the 50s and 60s that America has forgotten.

Davis perfectly laid out the events that happened leading up to the southern strategy and showed how and why political realignment happened.

Anyone saying we shouldn't forget our history *needs* to read this book.

Ever had a far-right winger throw the aged old Dems were the party of slavery argument at you? If you live in the south like me, I know for a fact that you have and I’d bet money that like me, you were all too quick to remind them of the infamous historical “party switch” only to have them tell you that you’re wrong, that such a switch never happened. Well it turns out that we were all wrong… kind of. If you want to understand why and how, you’ve got to get this book.
DixieGOPS is an easy but thorough read that covers the beginnings of southern Democrats or Dixiecrats and how during the early 19th century these southern Dems frequently worked and even conspired with Republicans to further Progressive agendas that often left minority populations and women behind. She explains how the coalition led to the birth of the filibuster amid intense resistance to the Civil Rights Act and integration efforts, and even more interesting, how this coalition which dominated American politics from the late 40s to the mid-60s assured a “disheveled and disorganized” democratic party that pushed the Republican party ever further to the right creating the stage for an “extreme political polarization” that remains the American standard today.

Just a hit piece

The whole book is written as an ah-piece against Republicans because the author dislikes that particular political party. She admits this at the beginning which mires the entire book. The author is not an actual historian because if she was the book would have been more thorough and ideas completed. The switch happened in 1992, not the 1960s, largely because of Ronald Reagan's policies. It's not to say that the book doesn't make some decent points but in order for the author to make each point the author leaves out other things that would go against the author's narrative. If you want to know the whole story without unnecessary bias read a book written by an actual historian.
