This is the problem: Americans buy cheap and don't support labor unions, so Dixon goes along for the lower price production, overseas. The pencils get shipped more times, make more stops for changes of vehicle, customs inspections, reloading, re-sorting... Every single time a box of pencils gets moved, it gets tossed, slapped down, shoved and bumped. That puts a lot of stress on the pencils inside. Wooden pencils can't take that kind of abuse. Now Americans are getting what we paid for: cheap pieces of lead cased in nice American wood. Oh, and there is A LOT more wasted time in classrooms, trying to get a pencil sharp. Ticonderoga's overseas business is contributing to lowering American instructional efficiency. Don't bother buying from them until they return production to the USA. I'll be happy to pay more, keeping fellow Americans employed and teaching without so many interruptions to class.
Well you couldn't be more wrong. Ticonderoga pencils are in a class all to themselves. Oh how I pity the poor souls who swear allegiance to other pencil brands. They write cleanly and smoothly. Unlike some of their cheaper competitors, Ticonderoga pencils are made with REAL wood and you certainly can tell the difference when you first hold it. Unlike pencils which are more plastic than wood, Ticonderogas sharpen cleanly and easily. You don't have to deal with those frustrating experiences of sharpening a pencil only to have the point break either inside or soon after removing the pencil from the sharpener. I press down rather hard when I write, and where normal pencils quickly snap Ticonderoga remains firm.
The eraser alone is worth the extra cost. They erase cleanly without leaving smudges or (as is the case with really bad pencils) terrible pink marks on your paper. With Ticonderoga pencils a little erasing goes a long way and most of the time you can hardly tell you erased something at all when you are finished.
This particular set comes pre-sharpened, which is great for when you are heading to an exam and suddenly realize you don't have anything to write with. They are ready to be used as soon as they are removed from the box.
Don't take the "World's Greatest Pencil" claim as faux advertising. They have every right to make that claim given the level of quality.
These have the same quality as always -- real wood (not compressed particles), perfect #2 lead, and the classic yellow color!
I love that some things haven't changed over the years!
