For four years, Django Django were busy making buoyant psychedelic pop music in the East London bedroom of drummer/producer David Maclean; Vincent Neff, the singer and guitarist,Jimmy Dixon, bassist and synth operator Tommy Grace make up the rest of the band. The result of these lengthy sessions is the self-titled debut album that The Guardian gave a 5 out of 5 and the NME gave an 8 out of 10!

From the deliberate pacing of the album's "Introduction" into the song "Hail Bop", ridiculously catchy vocal harmonies weave with tremolo soaked guitars and driving percussion to make for one of the most infectious albums of the year!!!
The following track "Default" begins with a schizoid vocal loop over a beat that will have you begging for it to get out of your head (albeit, in a very good way) before launching into one of the most simplistic, but great, guitar riffs of this year.
As for the aforementioned vocal harmonies, the chorus of "Love's Dart" has one that could make James Mercer wish he'd included it on this year's The Shins album.
All of that said, this isn't a straight electro-indie-pop affair. On the contrary, it is an odd little beast that makes you roll with and embrace whatever hairpin turns it wants to take at a split-second's notice (e.g. "Skies Over Cairo"). Now that I think about it, no genre really describes this album accurately.
Infectious, challenging and, for me anyways, a great new discovery to end what has already been a great year for music!!!!
And a few tracks on this album I could pretty much just press repeat on and listen to the same song a million times. Most notably, # 11 : "Life's A Beach." They sound like the love child of The Beach Boys and... I dunno... Architecture in Helsinki's sophisticated older brother? But that would make The Beach Boys the girl in this scenario... :/ Anyway, those of you with better band vocabulary than I can probably pin down a better description once you listen to it. But I can at least say it's very rhythmically interesting, got a good bass line (makes driving feel a little extra fun ;) ), very well-scored, instrumentally diverse, and somewhat experimental-sounding without being alienating. In fact, I would even call it catchy. Even the tracks I didn't much like to begin with have grown on me.
If you don't like a lot of repetition of rhythms or phrases within songs (as is common in electronic-y music), then this might not be the album for you. But I like to think this band has enough creative variation across and between the repeated sections that it's not obnoxious. They push the line a bit in # 4 Zumm Zumm with the "got to get to know"s, but like I said--even that song has grown on me.
BTW, if the reference to 60s & 70s albums wasn't clear enough, I'm pretty old but I can't stand listening to 'classic rock.' Yuk. So, even if you're old, give these guys a listen--they're great. Great lyrics, clean arrangements, good voices, rockin' beat. One of their songs was used as backup on a National Geographic special--as a lion skulked up & then ran at its prey, one of the really spare but fast rocker songs on this album played. Perfect!
I seek out new music all the time and then I usually pick the tracks apart in my head ("that guitar riff is so overused" "ouch, the drummer just fell behind" etc.). With Django Django, I keep thinking, "wow, that bit was nice." Love them.

It is catchy and enjoyable, get it you will most likely enjoy it.
