Djinn is the story the quirky, endearing and vivacious Cindy who embarks on a horrifying and twisted journey the day Sasha her favourite book store owner hands her a book more mysterious than she has ever had the pleasure of laying her hands on before. Cindy who has a penchant for anything occult especially if it is in the form of an ancient tome instantly knows that this book is incredibly special. This book that seems to live up to the name Djinn right off the bat. At this point in the book I was honestly rooting her on, open the book, open the book. Who doesnt want their very own genie in a book that can make their every wish and dream come true? But it seems there are entities out there that do not want Cindy to succeed and will do anything in their power to prevent her from the magic of he Djinn and so starts a ride so dark and hard I was left breathless and shaking at every turn in the story. This was probably one of the most intense, scary and heart breaking books I have ever read and I honestly cannot wait to pick it up ad read it all over again just to catch the lil bits I might have missed. If you are familiar with Poppet's unique and heart pounding style of wrting then you will not be dissapointed in any way shape or form. This is probably one of her best works yet. If you are unfamiliar with her work then Hold on enjoy the ride of a lifetime
The story was about Cindy, early 20's, a kinda hippee girl, into occult & stuff like that. Her favorite store, Para-Dice is run by Sasha, a man who has always had eyes for her and is constantly trying to impress her with 'special' things he comes across just for her. This time it was a cool looking ancient leather bound book called Djinn. They will soon find out that Djinn is not just any old book. Her life, as well as Sasha's are about to take an amazing & horrifying turn!
I was glued to my Kindle after starting this book. When I absolutely HAD to set it down (in the shower and while driving!) my thoughts kept returning to the story and the characters. The characters were great, very well formed, particularly Sasha & probably because we heard the most from him. Sasha narrated first person throughout much of the book. Sometimes the perspective would switch to Cindy which I initially feared was going to become confusing quickly. If I have even one single problem with this book, it is that. The changing perspectives without warning. Sometimes I would have to go back to the chapter change and start over to see if I could get any better hints as to whom was speaking. I think just a name at the beginning of a new person's thought would be very helpful. It wasn't a major thing, just a speedbump sort of, but it took the flow out of my reading for a time.
Cindy and Sasha get into lots of different healing and meditative techniques. This stuff was all like a foreign language to me, but it was interesting stuff. I learned some things from it. If this is not new to you, you may really have fun with this book. Still, I know zero and I was able to keep up.
VERY NOT gory! There is some bleeding and killing but I was never grossed out by it.
Ya gotta read this book, horror lover or no...it's just SO GOOD!! Now I just have to get back to deciding exactly which Poppet book I'll be moving on to next. Poppet has new and devoted fan!!(less)
