This book is basically a whole bunch vignettes from founders, containing exactly this sort of wisdom, collected, collated, and commented upon by the TechStars founders. Not all of it is going to apply to your venture, but the same goes for any advice you might receive. If you (unlike me) have got it all figured out, then you don't need the book in the first place. But, if you're looking for bars to measure yourself against and ways to be challenged, then you might find the book as useful as I have.
Let me be clear, this book is probably intended for people running the sort of companies that fit the TechStars/accelerator paradigm. If that's not your roadmap, then perhaps you won't find the book as useful. But then again, why would you be buying a book that has "TechStars" in the subtitle? Of course it talks about them a lot; it's about lessons learned in 5 years of running the program.
My company is trying to get into the program, and I think this book is an enlightening roadmap of how to be the sort of entrepreneur TechStars, other accelerators, and angels seek to invest in. Because it's important to know that it's your team that's being invested in, not your "million dollar idea". I give this book 5-stars, because it's given me plenty to consider and act upon. It has most certainly provided me far more in intellectual capital than it cost in money.
What they've done is, publish the collective wisdom of their entrepreneurial network - based in Boulder - but now reaching out to Boston, Seattle, NYC, (and who knows where, next) - to aspire every young tech entrepreneur -- even if those entrepreneurs don't have "tech experience".
This ground-breaking book is jam-packed with wisdom, solid advice, and great insights. I recommend every new tech startup team - whether they are a young, first-time startup team, or not - make a detailed study of the wealth of great advice and insights, contained in this book.
All you need, according to Feld & Cohen - is the right "heart" - not necessarily including technical experience.
I'll have a more in-depth review up within a few days on my blog at StartupTrek.net - extending this post; I'll post that on Amazon, B&N.com, Shelfari (etc). There are so many insights in this book, that a decent review would take 20+ pages. But i intend to limit my review to less than 2 pages:)
You can purchase "Do More Faster" either on your Kindle, or at Barnes and Noble for your Nook. Or -- read it on your PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone... anything that has a Kindle or Nook Reader application. If you are TRULY a neanderthal...or perhaps, just a Bibliophile... then buy the book!
Interestingly, B&N beat Amazon to the punch with this eBook, and stated that it was going to hold out until the official Oct 19 "release date" to make the print version available. But today, the Kindle/e-Book version appeared - 5 days early - after word got out that it was already available at B&N.
Is this going to be a "hot book"? Only the wizards of the publishing industry know, for sure.
If you're fascinated by entrepreneurship - what to do, and what NOT to do - then read this book, and enjoy!
The book very clearly and understandably linked to TechStars, a terrific program for identifying, mentoring and helping aspiring tech entrepreneurial teams to rapidly prototype, launch and attract attention and investment from Angels and VCs. However, this book is also very useful for businesses seeking to streamline and accelerate development of new products and business niches. It is practical while also emphasizing some of the key intangibles that startup teams too often push aside. And, while emphasizing practical, real-world requirements, most chapters include additional observations.
Highly recommended for industry you may be in and whether or not you are oriented toward the technology sector.

Strong points are made including that if you have an idea, you can be sure half a dozen people around the world are already working on it, and that most start-ups started out doing something totally different from what they do now. Myths are busted including the belief some entrepreneurs have that they need to raise external cash to find validation. Remarkable honesty is on offer such as in Issac Saldana's essay on how he much preferred writing code over talking to people, but how the latter helped him create a valuable and valued product. The value of pragmatic over perfect is demonstrated such as by Matt Mullenweg in how 2006 became Wordpress's lost year, not in a bad way but in a way that brought a valuable lesson regarding product releases and discipline to Automattic. And good advice too such as the essay titled "stay healthy", which I have often said to young entrepreneurs I know including one who had to be hospitalised for a few days to accept the value of good health above all else. Brad Feld's punchy essay "The plural of anecdote is not data" but establishes a home-truth about the need to question and validate any data, especially anecdotes often peddled as truths. I marked out several essays as my favourite by folding pages. No points for guessing more than three-quarters of the book was folded over by the time I finished reading it.
However the definition of "tech" used here is relatively narrow. If you somehow miss paying attention to iRobot (Why would you do that anyway? They make Roomba!) you might think "tech" is all about the web and services. But on some reflection, it is easy to see the broader applicability of the lessons to successful commercialisation of innovation in other sectors too.
Usefulness note: The saying goes: "Ordinary people learn from their mistakes; smart ones learn from others' mistakes". If you think you have a world-changing idea (or if you know someone who thinks so), you - or that person - may want to learn from some of the most successful entrepreneurs featured in the book. If you don't think you can learn anything from this book, then you perhaps need to make your own mistakes in executing that idea, in which case, refer to the saying above. If you are a mentor to start-ups, you will equally enjoy this book and the thoughts it provokes.
