Do What You Said You Would Do: Fighting for Freedom in the Swamp Hardcover – November 23, 2021
Purchase options and add-ons
When I woke up on October 2, 2020, I figured it would be like most Fridays in DC. Congress would finish up the week with a few votes on the House Floor and then members would rush to Reagan National Airport to catch a flight home. Polly and I had a mid-afternoon flight; however, we weren’t headed home. We were going to Wisconsin to help a colleague raise funds and to attend the President’s rally in Green Bay…. As I started to put on my workout gear before heading to the House gym, I took a look at my phone. I noticed I had several text messages and missed phone calls from Russell Dye, the top media staffer for our personal office and for Republicans on the House Judiciary Committee. Some of the calls and messages were from after midnight…. I called him right away.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
He responded, “Sir, the president has the virus!”
I turned on the TV. It was the only story.… I had traveled to Cleveland with the president three days earlier—I knew I’d have to quarantine until I got tested. I’d been tested before the flight to Cleveland, but that wouldn’t matter now. I’d have to get a new test. No workout this morning, no flight to Wisconsin this afternoon…. First things first. I was scheduled for a Fox and Friends interview that morning in the eight o’clock hour. I grabbed a quick shower and then headed to the office to prep for the interview. We were supposed to discuss the election and how the president was doing in Ohio. But we knew the only topic would be the president contracting the virus…. An hour later I got tested in the House physician’s office.… On that drive home Polly and I talked about all that had transpired that morning. We talked about the president and first lady, and like millions of other Americans, we prayed for their health and for our country. Over the weekend I thought about that day—that one day—Friday, October 2, 2020: it was really a picture of the entire year. 2020 was about the virus and the presidential election. 2020 was all about politics.

I saw Jordan ask Dr. Fauci questions. Dr. Fauci’s answers illustrate that he is a politician. Jordan writes about the questions he asked Dr. Fauci:
“ When it was my turn to ask questions, I asked, "Dr. Fauci, do
protests increase the spread of the virus?"
Dr. Fauci restated my question and then said that he could
make a general statement: crowding without masks contributes to
the spread of the virus. He had gone exactly where I thought he
would. I then asked, "Should we limit the protesting?" He wouldn't
answer this question, which we also thought would be the case.
Instead, he said that he wasn't in a position to make a determination
about that.
I said, "Well, you can sure make recommendations on all kinds
of other subjects like baseball and online dating." I reminded Dr.
Fauci that "government is stopping people from going to church,
going to work, and going to school. I'm just asking if we should stop
people from protesting especially since you just said it increases
the spread of the virus."
He still wouldn't answer. I also let the doctor know that police aren't getting attacked at church or work or schools, but they are during protests. And American small businesses aren't getting destroyed when people go to church, work, and school like they are during the protests.
"Should we stop the protests?" I asked again. He still would
not answer the question. And that's the point for the left: politics
trumps everything else.
It's okay to limit Americans' First Amendment liberties such as the practice of religion. But when it comes to the right to protest--to petition the government-that's
just fine as long as it's something the left approves.
The Antifa and Black Lives Matter riots and protests that destroyed millions of
dollars of property and harmed hundreds of law enforcement officers
are just fine; a Trump rally is not. Neither is a protest at the
Michigan state capital to let Michiganders go back to work. These
events "increase the spread" and shouldn't be permitted according
to Dr. Fauci and the Democrats.
Dr. Fauci wouldn't answer my question, and by so doing, he
illustrated to the country exactly what I wanted them to see.”
Jordan shows his political insight.
He represents my Congressional District, Ohio's 4th, and thereby represents me. I met him briefly once, when he was running for the Ohio House for the first time back in 1994. He stopped in to the local newspaper where I was managing editor. It was after deadline and I was the only one in the office. He was a trim little guy in shirtsleeves with a firm handshake and a smile. I voted for him and he won.
From the title, I thought the book would be some kind of blueprint for future strategy, but it's more like a highly detailed diary of his experiences inside some of the most intense political dramas of the past decade. The "Fighting for Freedom" subhead refers to Jordan being one of the founders of the House Freedom Caucus, a group that has ruffled feathers on both sides of the aisle. There are both Republicans and Democrats who do not fare well in these pages.
I found the book interesting for the way he opens the innards of the corpulent corpus of Congress. On the one side were the RINO-like methods of Speakers Boehner and Ryan, and on the other the tyranny and deceit of Chairmen Nadler and Schiff, and the Freedom Caucus in the middle, trying to follow the will of the people.
That sounds sort of self-serving, but the book doesn't read that way. Jordan writes with a straightforward honesty about realistic expectations, that somehow sounds daunting and optimistic at the same time. I'm hoping we can elect more like him.
