"Shelter, food, and love: Is there anything more important? In The Do It Yourself Homestead, Tessa Zundel weaves these themes together, making homesteader dreams a practical reality. If you value family, food, and farming, then this is your book." --Forrest Pritchard, farmer and New York Times bestselling author of Gaining Ground and Growing Tomorrow
"Intuitively, many people know that resiliency starts in the home, but as a culture we've lost the homestead arts. Not to worry. The Do It Yourself Homestead offers an eclectic recipe for success, whether you're starting or fine-tuning. A great addition to any homesteader's library..." --Joel Salatin, farmer, lecturer and author of Folks, This Ain't Normal and Everything I Want to do is Illegal
From the Author
Writing this book was an exercise in maintaining a vision of its possibilities while trudging through the sometimes rather mundane tasks of editing and formatting when all I really wanted to do was share the joy of compost and home-canned veggies. And, no, the irony was not lost on me that while I wrote the book on homesteading, I had to take two years off of...homesteading. I knew, though, that it had to be written, more for me than anyone else. I can't put into words how much I learned in the process, and isn't that always the way?
Even those who aren't particularly religious have had those feelings of utter conviction - something you knew you're meant to do. And when you see it through, you are both famished and replete. That's me, at the end of this project, offering the best I have for you to flip through and see what's of value to you right now. I wish you well and may your every worthy endeavor come to pass precisely as it should for your benefit on your land and with your family.
I had the help of so many other homesteaders and writers as I compiled this information that I feel I should shout my thanks from the rooftops. I'm a much better homesteader and woman just for knowing them. If you find something here that inspires you in any way, your praise should rightfully be directed to these contributors and their wisdom which was very much inspired. The only parts I can really take any credit for are the errors you may find - those are all me. Otherwise, my thanks to the contributors and Soli Deo Gloria.
May the road rise up to meet you on this, your homesteading journey.

There's lots of practical advice on the different aspects of DiY living to help you be successful. Recipes and tips that will help you manage your resources without debt. There's also a section on homestead-y enterprises that you can use to finance your dream. These include handcrafts, value added homestead products, and other less hands on ideas. Since Ms. Zundel has been there, you know that her list isn't just a brain dump on paper. These ideas have a track record behind them.
Is there a conflict between the old fashioned concept of homesteading and the modern digital age? Consider this the roadmap around the pitfalls. Ms. Zundel advices you on the websites, blogs, and books that are going to help you the most on your homestead journey. She introduces you to the best that the digital age has to offer to self sufficiency, simple living advocates. If you are feeling alone on your homestead journey, Ms. Zundel gets it, and points in the direction of finding that community you need.
When you buy this book, you'll want to buy a journal, too. Every single concept in the book has a journal exercise to let you personalize what you're learning and get down your ideas before they're lost to the next meaty section of the book. Plus among the journal exercises are hands-on directions to get you up off the couch and moving toward your goals.
The DiY Homestead belongs in every DiYers library.
