Editorial Reviews

“Sweet, stirring, and completely addictive” ––Slate

“Delightfully quirky” —Los Angeles Times

He’s surly, tactless, self-centered, and uptight—but he’s the only doctor in town.

Relocating to the picturesque village of Portwenn is not what this doctor ordered. After developing a crippling fear of blood, hotshot London surgeon Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes, Men Behaving Badly) reluctantly retrains as a GP and opens a practice in the quirky seaside town, where he quickly offends the villagers with his dour and dismissive bedside manner.

In these five complete series, Doc Martin catches the eye of the most beautiful woman in Portwenn (Caroline Catz, Murder in Suburbia), tests the patience of his long-suffering aunt (Stephanie Cole, Tenko), and repeatedly hurts feelings as he heals bodies. The two feature-length movies reveal the character’s first incarnation as Dr. Martin Bamford. He’s still ornery but less socially inept, an obstetrician fleeing to the coastal village to reassess his marriage and career.

Martin Clunes delivers an uproarious lead performance, aided by outstanding supporting casts, in this award-winning fish-out-of-water comedy.

This is the definitive Doc Martin collection comprising the five series plus the movies which have been released to date. Doc Martin has aired between 2004 and 2011 and there have been a total of 37 episodes broadcast plus the Christmas Special in 2006 and the two movie length episodes which preceded the first series.

Doctor Martin Ellingham or Doc Martin was formerly a highly successful surgeon in a London hospital, who was forced to leave this job due to a fear of blood. He takes the job of GP in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn and is soon finding it difficult to relate to the locals due to what he considers his businesslike approach, but which is interpreted by those on the receiving end as standoffishness and a total lack of empathy and bedside manner. This extends to his personal life and his difficult relationship with the long suffering Louisa since he has very little in the way of people skills and a total inability to express emotion.

Portwenn is one of those places where nothing very significant seems to happen for a lot of the time, but which is inhabited by a gentle range of eccentric locals whom the stories are built around and the whole mix makes for very good and often quite amusing entertainment. Martin Clunes excels as Doc Martin and plays the part with a largely expressionless face except for the odd twinge of exasperation or irritation which occasionally crosses his brow. He has made this part his own and you really cannot imagine anyone else as Doc Martin. There is a very able supporting cast, but the principal characters have varied from series to series.

Although this contains the 5 series of Doc Martin to date and the two prequels, purchasers should be aware that a sixth series is now confirmed for 2013. However, this will very likely be the final series. I would have thought that Doc Martin was one of those scenarios where it was possible to keep producing fresh scripts so personally I am certainly hoping for more!

This winning hit combines a country doctor, who faints at the sight of blood, with quirky villagers, and fantastic English seaside visual charm. Now the entire 38 episode series is packaged together, along with 2 TV movies that spawned the series. It's a must-see-all opportunity in the full-deal package. A set to own, for continuing viewing privilege; time after time. A comedy classic British production.

SUBTITLES- yes!
TV Season 1: Martin Clunes plays the London surgeon moving into sleepy Portwenn. Viewers are introduced to characters so odd they become household names. 6 episodes of hysterical hilarity.
2: Nine new episodes fail to ease the surly self-centered doctor. Romance (Caroline Catz) lingers on Cornish fishing village streets.
3: Doc's aunt (Stephanie Cole) is one of the less eccentric locals through the season's 7 episodes. Bert Large (Ian McNeice) plumber turned chef is wildly goofy as is Doc's receptionist.
4: The previous season ended in a surprise and they continue in 8 episodes with romance and blood sparking rumors, even a ghost.
5: Doc Martin (Martin Clunes) had packed prepared for a new position out of Portwenn. But girlfriend Louisa, a nameless son, & Aunt did not love his planned exit. That was then. Now we have 8 new episodes, and enjoy you will.
THE MOVIES: Doc Martin- 87 min.Doc discovers 3 doctor friends have bedded his wife. A trip to seclusion ends in Port Isaac mud and a lobster boat gig.
Doc Martin and the Legend of the Cloutie- 75 min. Doc stoops to cloutie-ing to get an out-of-the-way home he must fight for.

You will never regret buying this HUGE 38 episode plus 2 feature length movie SET. Laugh from minute one till the end.
Not enough of Martin Clunes yet?--Try "Dirty Tricks" and "Reggie Perrin."

If you like British comedy with a heart, this is the perfect series. Watched on PBS and had to buy it.
CAUTION: Be sure to order the correct format for your region (US vs UK) because it won't work otherwise!
Luckily, I caught the mistake quickly and they cancelled the first order.

I bought this for my British Mum for Mothers Day. We had no idea there were 2 Doc Martin movies prior to the series before ordering this. This set includes both movies, and seasons 1 through 5. Season 6 is in progress. As my Mum puts it, this reminds her of home. The characters are terrific, and very British. Typical British stoic silliness. If you love British humor, this is a wonderful English Dramedy.

I came to love Doc Martin on PBS, and when my station was dropped, I HAD to keep watching, as I was hooked. I ordered this special collection, and have been getting my Doc Martin fix regularly. This is a unique show, to say the least. Yes, we've seen grumpy doctors before, but this one manages to capture the heart--perhaps his horrible childhood at the hands of unloving, uninvolved parents makes his social failings understandable, I don't know. I love Port Wen, and the scenery alone is worth a look at this series. The characters are quirkier than most even in this genre. They make the denizens of Northern Exposure seem almost normal. I would move there in a Cornwall second! Get the whole series, and watch them in order to get the most enjoyment from this wonderful series.

I've seen some of the episodes on PBS so decided to purchase the entire series. Terrific stories, great characters. Played it with subtitles because some of the British accents can be a bit difficult to understand. Downton Abbey in Cornwall without the royalty.
