Doc Holliday (Keach) is on his way to Tombstone, Arizona at the request of his friend Wyatt Earp (Yulin). Earp’s going to be running for town sheriff in the election and wants Holliday there because of the difficulty he’s having with the Clanton’s. On the trip in, he meets Kate Elder (Dunaway) and hooks up with her.
This is largely a character study with a bit of action so don’t expect “High Plains Drifter”.
Thr Kino Blu-Ray looks marvelous with eich color, textures and nice depth, delineation. This is from a new 2K transfer. The audio is clear and with a nice mono presentation.
The previous UK release looked pretty good but this beats it completely. It did have more special features and it’s a pity we didn’t get more but the higher bit rate translates to a better quality picture and depth.
There’s a commentary track by film director Alex Cox. A bit of trivia is that the film win the Western Writer’s
of America Spur Award.
Yulin’s authoritative, quietly powerful performance is complimented by Keach’s world weary Doc in this underrated western.
The only criticism I have is a scene where Valdez picks off several enemies from 1,000 yards with his single-shot black powder rifle. Entertaining, but not possible. Loading such a rifle involves several steps - pouring powder down the barrel, then ramming the projectile down the barrel, & placing a percussion cap under the hammer. It shows him loading the rifle for only the first shot, then continuing to fire without reloading for subsequent shots. Also, at the distance Valdez claims (in the dialogue) to have fired, the targets would be almost impossible to see without a scope. But, old westerns weren't known for authenticity; back then, some six-shooters fired indefinitely without reloading.

There was a scene involved Faye Dunaway that freezes, then jumps back a couple of seconds then plays again. In addition, there are a couple of freezing frames, luckily it plays out without interruptions.
This is the common problem with some of the DVDs. To avoid that, buy blu rays.
Pete Hamill's script has its problems. Doc Holliday rides into town trying to earn money by gambling and washing down with whiskey to cure his TB. Doc and Wyatt Earp have their history but time has changed,
Earp has ambition to become a politician after cleaning up Tombstone the town.
None of these has been developed drama-wise. Meanwhile Doc strikes up a relationship with Katy Elder,
a whore played by Faye Dunaway. The conflicts between Earp and the Clinton clan are not detailed.
The film is held together by two strong performances of Stacy Keach and Harris Yulin, two of the top actors from NY at the time.
As a whole, the film is not entirely successful.
The film tells of Doc Holiday (Stacy Keach) a feared gunman linking-up with Kate Elder (Faye Dunnaway) a good-time gal' as a result of winning her in a card game.
The two head for Tombstone to link-up with Doc's old friend Wyatt Earp (Harris Yulin) a regional Marshall who is trying to get elected as the town sheriff with a mind to clean-up the town in more ways than one.
Wyatt has a problem with local Cowboy-Member Ike Clanton, an issue that was set to boil over leading to the legendary gunfight at the O.K Coral October 26th 1881
Other than the lead acts Stacy Keach and Faye Dunnaway, the remainder of the casting is perhaps a little weak.
The storyline itself though often gritty with a few violent and threat sequences is somewhat historically fanciful, it's a Hollywood make-over.
(only three died during the gunfight)
I myself have seen several versions of the events surrounding the infamous gunfight, the most accurate probably being the Kevin Costner 1994 film WYATT EARP, the most entertaining probably Kurt Russell 1993 version TOMBSTONE .....(both worthy of a viewing)
The picture quality on Blu-ray okay but not brilliant.
Footnote - The film can be hired/bought to watch currently on Prime also.

Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday were real people, and have been portrayed many times
before, but this is a revisionist Western, and here we have a more truthful version of
the real West.
Doc Holliday went to the West because he had TB, and met up with Wyatt Earp, as
well as "Big Nose Kate", although she isn't called that here. Kate Elder became Doc
Holliday's partner, and here there is a lot more of their relationship, albeit, with
some poetic historial license.
The Gunfight at the OK Corral, must be the most detailed gunfight in Western
History, as there were many witnesses, and a Court trial, but still, the folklore
remains. This version is maybe more accurate than others, as the gunfight only
lasted 30 seconds, and here Wyatt Earp is a man driven by greed and political
ambition, and Doc just wants "something else" before he dies of TB.
The cast is great, and music is by Jimmy Webb!?! In fact, I'd go as far as to say,
this has to be the best film version of The Gunfight at the OK Corral!
