It began with the hijacking of a destroyer from the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The stolen warship struck midtown Manhattan with its mighty guns, then vanished far out to sea.
Who were the strange men wearing the golden uniforms of no known power who pulled off the daring highjacking? And who was their mysterious leader, a being of seemingly supernatural abilities?
Doc Savage did not know. But The Shadow did! Combining forces, the Man of Bronze and the Dark Avenger follow the trail of a superfoe from The Shadow’s past.
But can they learn to trust one another?
From fog-shrouded New York to a futuristic underground kingdom in the heart of Asia, the battle sprawls––with the world’s fate at stake!

The previous pairing of the Shadow with Doc Savage was handicapped by the fact that it occurred very early in the Shadow's career, when he had faced only a handful of villains, and by the fact that Doc Savage and his associates played a fairly minor role. In this second outing, we are very late in the careers of both Doc Savage and the Shadow, on the verge of the US entering World War 2, and the Shadow has vanquished so many supercriminals that he has a huge stash of superweapons in his secret NYC lair. The evil Shiwan Khan has plans for those weapons, and steals them all in a daring raid. With both Doc Savage and the Shadow pretty much independently hot on his trail, which leads to Khan's secret stronghold of Xanadu, there is almost continuous action. In this outing Doc Savage and his associates play the major role, with the Shadow often offstage. I enjoyed this adventure greatly, and give a strong recommendation to any fans of either Doc or the Shadow.

As patron Tim King so aptly put it, pulp nirvana! This was a fantastic marriage of the styles of the two greatest pulp heroes, even better than their first meeting. Fantastic because Doc was still Doc, while the Shadow was unmistakably (?) the Shadow! Facing the Shadow’s greatest foe (one capable of thwarting even Doc and his crew) together, not as a team, but as uneasy allies, the heroes nonetheless reflected a chemistry that bespeaks future joint tales. At least, I hope so! This would make a great blockbuster movie, maybe third or fourth in a series. Maybe other nemeses of both heroes could be resurrected for future stories. Twenty-one novels in the Savage line for Will Murray in his unusual collaboration with Lester Dent, quite an accomplishment and one I hope will continue for many volumes of pleasurable reading to come. This book is well worth the read( but read “The Sinister Shadow” first!).

Doc Savage and The Shadow are great together!
I originally purchased this book on Apple books, but as with all books that I really enjoy I purchased a hardcopy to keep or pass down to others.
An exciting, action packed story with my two favorite super-heroes. How I wish Hollywood would make a PG version of this terrific story.
I really enjoyed the 1930s/1940s writing style. This book will definitely improve your vocabulary. Also, the lack of political correctness was most refreshing.
Buy this book, you WILL enjoy it.

The answer is a solid "Yes."
When I started reading this, I felt as if the story was skewed toward The Shadow, just as I felt it was in the previous Shadow-Savage go 'round, but I'm happy to say that by the end the team-up was an equal one with both Pulp superstars shining through. Lots of exciting moments, punctuated with discussions of who each of the lead heroes are and the differences between them. In fact, those differences stand in even starker relief here then in SINISTER SHADOW, I think.
If I have a nit to pick at all, it's just that the book is a bit too long. I get it that the restrictions of the old Pulp magazines no longer exist, but I'd love to see a return to the leaner, meaner Doc tales of the past.

Without the help and sometime hindrance of the Shadow, Doc Savage would not of prevailed.

I've read close to thirty of the Doc Savage books over the last couple years. I took a break to sample some of the other pulp books and just returned to this one because the others just don't measure up. The writing is more riveting and contains thoughtful pieces of info that let the reader understand how Doc always come out ahead. It is interesting to watch Doc trying to come to terms with how the Shadow and himself value human life. In the end they reach an understanding to enable them to save the world.

This novel literally starts off with a bang and never let's up. I personally feel that this may well be the best in the 20 book series so far. I STRONGLY recommend this book and hope that the series continues to run for many many years to come.

The author has a great knowledge of both pulp heroes, and engages their differences well in developing his tale. These stories allow me to relax, and remember my working to acquire the reprints of these stories in the 70s.

Only The Shadows mightiest foe is mighty enough to take on both Doc Savage and The Shadow. This is the second Wild Adventures of Doc Savage to feature Doc and The Shadow having to work together to fight a common foe, in this case, an almost super-human foe, Shiwan Khan! This is even better than the first team up!

Great capture of the style of the pulps.
Not too naive, but not condescending in any way.
The author's love of the source material shines through.
