Doc Doc Zeus: A Novel of White Coat Crime Kindle Edition

4.2 4.2 out of 5 stars 16 ratings

Still mourning the baby she gave away a year before – and feeling rejected by the same church people who had so cheerfully arranged that adoption – sixteen-year-old Diane seems to find a supportive friend in her gynecologist, Dr. Zeus. Diane is intelligent and bold but often leaps before she looks, and now she questions why he has to examine her so often, and why he prescribes her so many drugs.

The state medical board also has suspicions about Dr. Zeus, but the official inquiry inches forward very slowly as its new investigator stumbles over his own hang-ups.

: "Keeps you hooked in the best possible way!" -- Manhattan Book Review"With Zeus, Keech draws a remarkably accurate picture of an especially dangerous form of sociopath -- not the serial killer of the public imagination but a white-coated, well-educated, and highly respected doctor. Mr. Keech's latest novel operates flawlessly on two levels. The most obvious is the story itself. A completely unscrupulous Doctor engages in heinous medical malpractice with a number of highly impressionable young girls. Hartwicke Zeus thinks that women were put on this earth to pleasure him, and he delights in maneuvering them, usually by getting them hooked onto prescription drugs, into situations where he can have his way with them. His ego knows no bounds, he fears no repercussions from any of his lecherous actions. Diane is one such "woman", a teenager who has given birth out of wedlock and immediately surrenders her unnamed child to foster care. From the start, she is suspicious of his intentions and actions, but gradually explains everything away as he increases his lecherous affections for her. Drugs (which she wisely keeps to a minimum), jewelry, clothes, trips on his boat and to his condo, all designed to demonstrate the power he holds over her. And then there's David, who is a brand-new investigator (but not a real detective!) for the Board of Medicine, whose job it is to investigate claims of malpractice against individual doctors. Just learning the ropes, David is appalled that the Board has to follow so many rules to put together a case, and has to sometimes compromise on a decision in order to bring about any justice at all. The story is excellent, and unfolds rapidly. The characters are great, plot development is fluid, and the whole novel is simply well-written and top notch. Other reviews will give you more detail on the happenings, if you need that. But it's a GREAT read!

The second level of this novel is the overarching story of the proliferation of this kind of abuse, and the perspective that I think Mr. Keech brings to the dialogue. Nationwide in scope, these despicable practices are often hard to uncover because of the unwillingness of the victims, young and defenseless girls, to do legal battle with the rich and powerful doctors who abuse them. From what I have read of Mr. Keech's background, he seems perfectly situated to provide us with all of the facts, opinions, and emotions that ascribe to these cases. He has been a legal counsel to the Maryland State Board of Physicians, a Legal Aid attorney, and a juvenile counselor, and I can feel each of those influences in his excellent novel. I obviously can't be sure, but my hunch is that there's a little of Mr. Keech in the very well-intentioned but somewhat frustrated David, who strongly empathizes with each of the victims.

It's an excellent novel -- you'll enjoy it!

First, let me say that for pure entertainment value, Doc Doc Zeus was an excellent read. Some books I enjoy reading, but can easily put down and not hurry to pick them back up. Other books, such as this one, I reluctantly put down and can't wait to get back to them to see what happens next.

Now to some other important points:

As a treatise detailing how some physicians use their position in society to prey on women (and very rarely, women physicians on men), this book is extremely accurate. One reviewer on this site was put off by the detail the author went into in describing how this abuse begins and progresses with the intended victim(s). I would say to that reviewer that this detail is important in that it shows the methodical, sometimes very patient way these sociopathic doctors cultivate and ensnare their victims, and as such is instructive for readers who may be personally involved or have a friend or family member embroiled in such a situation. This reviewer has more than a little knowledge of these activities, and as shown by Mr. Keech, these doctors can be popular and successful in their careers while very selectively abusing a small number of patients, so that other non-victim patients, colleagues, and family are in utter disbelief when they learn of the doctor's bad behavior. Also accurately portrayed is the great difficulty victims have in coming forward, and after they do, in going through with all of the procedural and judicial affronts to their damaged psyches mandated by the safeguards inherent to our legal system for the protection of all involved parties. And yes, while less common, there are definitely cases where good physicians are falsely or mistakenly accused of inappropriate sexual behavior.

In addition to the sexual malfeasance of the errant physician here, the book is excellent in also describing the kinds of unscrupulous business dealings that sometimes exist in the medical world as amoral doctors and greedy power hungry hospital administrators bargain under the table for what extra profits can be made trading in medical services.

Doc Doc Zeus does a great job in elucidating the inner workings of a state medical board and the constraints on, and frustrations of, hard working staffers in dealing with complainants, practitioners, attorneys, judges, and the very rules and regulations that define their role, duties, and how they may pursue their work as administrative (rather than criminal) law enforcement officials. The author is definitively expert in these matters with decades of direct experience in such cases. While interaction with the actual board members that would typically occur in such a case is not included here, I'll accept that as editorially necessary to keep the story tight and moving forward.

Once again, Tom Keech shows an uncanny ability to get into the minds of somewhat disaffected young people. He presents their thoughts, actions, and speech patterns in what this reader feels is an extremely authentic way. It was wonderful that he chose to reprise the roles of several of the teen characters from his earlier book Prey for Love and show them moving forward with their lives in positive ways as is more often the case than some would believe. The importance of loving family and caring friends for these troubled young people is made very clear. If you haven't read Prey for Love, I commend it to you as well, along with the author's other thoroughly enjoyable book, Hot Box in the Pizza District.

In summary, Doc Doc Zeus is an involving read that will keep you turning pages. Its important subject of physician sexual abuse is presented in disturbing, but very accurate detail, and this reader/reviewer believes that that is important and not overdone. You'll learn much about how a state medical board works. And, you'll find the characters engaging and true to life. You'll care what happens to them, and maybe even meet them again! Well done, Mr. Keech!

This book hooked you from the first chapter and kept you reading until the last page. I worked for 34 years in a hospital and felt the writer's insight into 'White Coat Crime' was dead on. It amazed me how real and believable he kept his characters. Definitely worth reading.
