Gentle’s book is a great companion to Tom Johnson’s API Documentation course on idratherbewriting.com. Gentle’s book provides talking points you can use to get leadership excited about and gain their approval for transforming the traditional documentation approach to docs-like-code. Then she digs into the detail a technical writer needs to understand how this whole docs-like-code thing works. She uses the book itself to exemplify this, since this was the approach she took to create and publish it. At the end she offers a tutorial to see for yourself how quickly this can be implemented. I’m in the midst of the tutorial so we’ll see!

The content gravitates to GitHub, development and bash.

It is very weak on explaining what git is and how it works. Examples are a bit too complex and you really don’t need to enter all the parameters used in some of them.

Some important git practices are omitted and some is unsuitable.
I.e GitFlow is really begging for issues, don’t even contemplate that branch strategy.
Git messages are essential for reading the flow of change and should *always* contain at last the What and the Why.

The world actually don’t consist of only bash and vi. PowerShell with posh-git and Visual Code (with gitlens, githraph, markdownlint and other plug-ins) are at least as good a combination as bash/vi.
But if you are used to it, don’t change it.

Although the book uses developement and API:s as a story background, the usage can be applied to configuration system such as Ansible and PowerShell Desired State Configuration as well.

Great read especially if you are just getting started in technical writing. Not a long book, I finished in 2 days. Would’ve finished on the 1st day but the book was delivered later in the day. I would recommend this book for beginner to intermediate level tech writers. But I’m sure more advance tech writers might even find some things useful from the book.

Many organizations and teams think of documentation as an afterthought. In Docs Like Code, Anne Gentle describes a better way and approach to documentation. I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to document your project (HINT: that's everyone) and struggles to find a good approach.

I thought this was a terrific introduction for technical communicators interested in migrating both their content source and philosophic paradigms to a code-based model. I think the book was broad enough to allow for multiple use cases and also specific enough for actual, pragmatic help in the here and now.

Even though I've used this model for years, I learned a few things in Docs Like Code that I'm going to take to my team and propose that we put in practice. It's an awesome resource for any writer interested in honing their craft.

This book was useful in figuring out what kind of starting point someone who has been writing technical docs in the pre-github era comes from. I didn't learn much new. Is well written though!

1.0 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware: Fake Copy

I was disappointed on seeing the book. I paid 1800 INR for the book, which seems like a rip off for a book that was printed by a regular printing press! The paper quality is bad, and the printing is not even. This book is an original copy, intact it is definitely printed by a local press.

Rather basic but is good for an overview. However, some text(?) inserts don't render in the Kindle reader properly, all I can see is gibberish in what I suppose is an example, sometimes with text.
