The Doctor Is In! America’s best-loved therapist, Dr. Ruth, is known for her wise counsel on all matters of the heart. Here she shares private stories from her past and her present, and her insights into living life to the fullest, at any age.

Everyone knows Dr. Ruth as the most famous and trusted sex therapist, but few people know she narrowly escaped death from the Holocaust, was raised in an orphanage in Switzerland, or that she was a sniper during Israel's War of Independence. After years spent as a student in Paris, Dr. Ruth came to America dreaming of a new life though never expecting the dramatic turns that would take place. And at the age of eighty-seven, she is as spirited as ever.

Through intimate and funny stories, Dr. Ruth sheds light on how she's learned to live a life filled with joie de vivre. And she shows readers how they too can learn to deal with tragedy and loss, challenges and success, all while nourishing an intellectual and emotional spark, and, above all, having fun! Hilarious, inspiring, and profound, The Doctor Is In will change the way you think about life and love, in all their limitless possibilities.

Dr. Ruth is an absolute inspiration and role model. Her sad beginnings never dampened her spirits, in fact, they made her more determined to make the best of her life. She has personality, chutzpah, a fabulous sense of humor and wonderful advice to share. An excellent read.

Great read. Until now I never knew the woman behind the legend. She is truly human and refreshingly fully alive. I recommend this book particularly for young people finding their way. It is practical and inspirational -- a shining star in the sky. Thanks Dr. Ruth!

Enjoyed most of the book and glad I read it. She goes on a bit some times. That part is the reason I give it only 3 stars.

Like a couple of other reviewers, I didn't know Dr. Ruth's history before her role/celebrity so this was a fun and little 'bits' of documentary of her life. As anyone (old enough) to know her, she isn't just THE first public sex therapist, she is the cute, funny, direct, ball-of-fire who has great insight. My greatest compliment about this book is that she has gone through quite a bit, but never let fame get the best of her (enjoyed what she should have) but continued(continues) to learn and also share with us! This book is just that! It's not about sex, it's about LIFE and I personally enjoyed it, the humor, have lots of respect and mostly love that she did come 'more into fame' later in life! Something that even young people can appreciate hearing.

She is a role model for living life to the fullest. I especially like her discussions of taking risks. The Nazis hurt her and her family, but she fought back by living a full and enjoyable life.

I gave this book a five star rating mostly because Dr. Ruth Westheimer is a Five Star human being. I learned much more about the life and philosophy of Dr. Ruth Westheimer. I learned how much more there was to this remarkable woman than I realized. Dr. Westheimer is a living example of unbelievable courage, perseverance, and an indomitable spirit that illuminates and illustrates the joy of being alive. That you, Dr. Westheimer, for sharing so much of your life with us.

Enjoyed her on the Diane Rehm show talking about this book, but the book itself is not very interesting. I expected an interesting back story about her escape from Germany during the war and her parents' deaths. But she has no narrative skill, gives few details, Doesn't seem to know how to connect with readers. She seems intent on not puffing herself up but the result is an uninteresting book. Her life is far more nteresting than her telling of it. She comes across better on radio than in print.
