Miss St John never disappoints with her stories that TUG at your heart strings and almost makes you pull out the old hankie. She writes the sweetest books - the heroes or heroines are very flawed, tormented and eventually encounter another person that makes them begin to live again and see life with new hope and light.

This is no different. The heroine has an accident and breaks her arm. She is taken to the local young doctor and after befriending her tells her that he needs a nanny for his young infant son, whose wife he was unable to safe in childbirth.

She's had the most appalling childhood - since her mother was the local whore at a small town, where she took care of her two young brothers. She is raped when she is very young and after her mother's death, she moves out of her home town, gets a job at the local boarding house, where she's been trying to save enough money to remove her brothers from the foster parents where they are housed and whose living conditions and treatment of the boys are truly appalling.

The simplicity of the story but complexity of the characters will have you turning the pages to see how their developing and budding relationship progresses. Her reactions at a simple kindness will have you smiling at the beauty of this young girl, who has suffered so much but her heart has retained kindness and is pure and loving. The hero is charming and patient with her - and when they eventually marry, she brings her brothers to their home for them to be a real family.

The ensuing story will warm your heart and give you a smile - at how these two people, specially the heroine, are able to live life again, trust other people and see the light of goodness once again. A gem of a book - highly recommended! I am sure it will hook you and make you search for other St John books. Be warned - her books are very hard to find as most of them are out of print. ENJOY

Cheryl St John has once again proven to her readers that it doesn't take a super hero or heroine to link us with our deepest emotions. In Caleb and Ellie's story, we are drawn into their lives, including their pain, sorrow, and dawning love. Be ready to settle back into your comfy chair, grab a box of tissues and spend the afternoon in sheer pleasure as Cheryl unfolds the tragedy of Ellie's young life, and how she overcomes issues that face many women yet today. I'm positive that you'll feel the same as I do! I want to meet Caleb and Ellie just to tell them both how much I care.

This is one of the best books I've read all year; I stayed up until 5:30 am to finish the story. The plot is simple enough but the characters and their emotions are very complex.

Ellie's mother is a whore living in appalling conditions. Ellie's baby sister dies of neglect and malnutrition. Ellie feeds her brothers and herself however she can -- even by stealing food from local gardens. Then, Ellie's mother sells Ellie and the real horror begins.

Years later, Ellie has become a Harvey Girl (for an explanation of what they were, go to my review for THE LAWMAN'S BRIDE (see below). As our story opens, Ellie falls and breaks her arm. She's taken to the new doctor in town and he sets her arm.

Dr. Caleb Chaney is a new widower with a three month-old baby; his wife died in childbirth and he was unable to save her. He is having a difficulty getting started in town because of his wife's death (if he can't save his own wife, just how good can he be) and his lack of patients (most folks take their chances with the seldom-sober old doctor).

When Dr. Chaney finds that Ellie cannot work with a broken arm, he hires her to care for his baby son until she can return to work at the Arcade (Harvey House). Because of Ellie's awful life, she is afraid of people (particularly men) and uncomfortable talking with those she does not know. However, she has two brothers in foster care that she needs to rescue and she needs the work; thus, she agrees to work for the doctor.

After several weeks of peace in his home, Caleb starts to worry what he will do when Ellie goes back to work. He asks her to marry him; they agree to a marriage of convenience. As part of the agreement, Caleb and Ellie go to collect her brothers.

No one writes romance like Cheryl St. John. Her talent is incomparable. She never fails to make me love her characters, they're always sympathetic, always human, always real. Caleb Chaney ought to have won a KISS award from Romantic Times. Men don't come any more heroic than this. I was hooked on page one and couldn't put it down until it was finished. I sobbed like a baby, and when it was over, I felt as if I'd won a prize, it was so thrilling to see Ellie get the life she deserved. I can't wait for Cheryl's next book.

The sexual tension between Ellie and Caleb is taut as a bowstring and quivers for release. THE DOCTOR'S WIFE reads like a mystery. The action seems relentless, making it imperative that we turn the pages faster and faster. Ms. St.John gifts her fans with a marvelous new book that will leave them sighing and eager for more.

I love this book. It grabs me and reminds me how blessed I am...and to give my kids an extra hug tonight. I know women who have gone through Ellie's struggles and to see the love story between Caleb and Ellie unfold is a precious thing. It's hard to show some of the uglier things in life with grace--but Cheryl does that in this book. And she shows how others can help us accept grace for our own lives. I cry every time I read this book...both tears of sorrow, but they turn to tears of joy. She writes with such tenderness that I'm captivated from first page to last. Do yourself a favor, schedule a day to read The Doctor's Wife cover to cover.
