Artemis is the newest competitor in the games, and she is determined to win against Dita. This time her player can't go wrong. Josie is a private investigator who has lost everything in the past three years. The love of her life left her for his ex girlfriend and their baby. And recently her best friend was murdered by the guy they were trying pin down for the murder of a sixteen year old girl. Artemis soon comes to realize just how closely related she is with her player and how she's still bitter about her own past with love.

Aphrodite woke up in the last book - falling hard and losing her way. Now, picking up the pieces she is distracted from the current game against a spiteful and bitter Artemis. Trying to find herself again and struggling, Dita's game is a little off this time round. Dita's player is Jon, Josie's ex boyfriend, the one who left her for his ex girlfriend, the mother of his child. Jon knows he handled Josie wrong all those years ago, but he really does still love Josie - and he's going to prove it. No matter what it takes.

This is my favorite book so far. Josie is pig-headed like you wouldn't believe. But she is independent, and she's hanging in there even with the murder of her best friend. Gosh, you really feel for Josie though. All the crap that life's thrown at her and she's still standing.

Jon messed up. He left Josie to help support his ex girlfriend and their baby. He never stopped loving Josie though. His heart was in the right place when he left the Dear John letter that never reached Josie. He messed up, but he knows that and he spends the entire book trying to fix it. I like Jon, and I'm his side throughput the book. But Josie can't deal with him and trying to find Anne's murderer.

Doe Eyes was quite different than the previous books. The gods are still having their competition over the loves, but this time, things take a deadly turn. Dita is up against Artemis who has chosen P.I., Josie, who is tough and closed off. Artemis also thinks Dita has an unfair advantage being the goddess of love and all, so Dita offers to choose Josie’s ex, Jon, as her player to make things more level. Well, Josie and Jon certainly have tension, but they’re also working on a serial killer case that is personal for Josie.

Does Eyes was dark and disturbing. It definitely read more like a Suspense than a Romance, and not even a Romantic Suspense. The serial killer has recently killed a teenage girl, although the police found no evidence of his identity. But Josie has a hunch about one of the neighbors. It turns out that he may have killed his high school girlfriend in the same manner, but was never an official suspect then either. Josie is close to cracking this, but then he kills her partner, and she becomes obsessed. She cannot rest until this man is caught. We even get his POV! He is one sick bastard! Things get a bit graphic.

As for the romance, Doe Eyes is obviously a second chance romance. Josie has been pissed at Jon for three years because he left without a word and she learned that he took off with his pregnant ex. Of course, she doesn’t know all of the details and Jon is desperate to win her back when he returns to the city. It’s not easy, especially when all of her attention is on this case, as it should be. So he does the only he can, get on the case with her! Meanwhile, Dita is sorting out her Ares drama. You go, girl!

Doe Eyes certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. For once, the gods are doing something useful during their meddling. They all see that things have gotten super dangerous, so along the way of pushing the lovers together, they also have to push toward getting this killer behind bars. It was just all very well done.

***WARNING! Some of DOE EYES content may be difficult to read. I know it may even turn a few readers away, BUT, to me it is absolutely necessary to capture the essence of the characters and the believability of the story. Push through. It's well worth it.***

Wow. I swear I fall more in love with this series and Staci's AMAZING style with each installment. Seeing as I am already head over heels for Dita, Perry, Heff, and yes- even Ares, that's saying quite a lot. Once again, I was immediately pulled in. Caught up once more in Dita's pain and sorrow. Her doubts and fears. And the new challenge set before her. She is one of the most beguiling characters out there. More human than any goddess should be. To me, that's what makes her so fun and loveable. And endearing. Ok, dammit. She's just freaking fantastic. I love her SO much.

Moving along...
This book is much darker than the others. There is more mystery and intrigue. And danger. And while it dealt with some pretty serious - and disturbing situations, it was FULL of AWESOME. Josie and Jon were both woooonderful characters. Josie- strong, fearless, and fiercely independent. Trying to move on after her heart is shattered. Jon- a man of honor, doing the best he can to right his mistakes and fulfill his promises.
Both exceptional at their jobs, relentless when seeking justice and the truth.

While this may sound all gloom and doom, this is, in fact a love story. A fabulous, tortuous, and exciting love story. Staci throws us a sweet twist from the previous books- this is the first time the players have a history together. Knowing this going in, it makes the stakes seem higher. And the relationships more authentic. More real. I loved every moment.
