From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Divorce is a very different arrangement in the 21st century than it was decades ago. No longer is it a place where mudslinging and blame are relevant; family courts look to divide assets and provide what's best for children. Wasser, a high-profile attorney handling celebrity and pro bono divorce cases, offers reasonable and helpful advice—including info about the preliminary consultation and telling your soon-to-be-ex that you want a divorce. Wasser counters the image of the manipulative divorce lawyer prolonging cases in order to claim more money. Above all, she reasons that starting a divorce well—that is, ending a marriage as it began, as a united team—is half the battle. If the couple in question has children, Wasser argues that it is best to remember that, no matter the logistics involved, kids and their parents will forever remain a family unit. Particularly useful are the tips Wasser offers: for example, when and how to tell everyone, and how to go about separating. The author also provides a Web site to help organize visitation and communication. But most of all, Wasser's clear and encouraging writing will help individuals divorce as quickly and painlessly as possible. (Oct.)

As a divorce attorney myself, I wholeheartedly agree with the advice in this book and would recommend it for anyone thinking about divorcing. It explains every step of the process and gives tons of practical advice on everything from how to ensure your children come out unscathed to what to wear in court to how to start your new life. Hard hitting, but if you can follow her advice, you will pay your attorney far less, come to resolution faster and maintain your dignity throughout the process.

The book is easy to read and full of examples/scenarios from Laura Wasser's practice that help illustrate her family-centered point of view. As somebody who is right now going through this process myself, this book should be required reading for anybody who is in a relationship. The book is really practical and full of useful information. I especially liked the overview to how family law has changed over time and her take on the current state of family law in the US. While she works with mainly celebrity and well-off clients, she has managed to write in a compelling book that I related to very well. Simple things, like your lawyer isn't your therapist and don't go into court seeking vengeance because it took two people to get into the marriage, so it really takes two people to get out of it. I also like that she is realistic and realizes that there are situations that fall outside of this, such as in an abusive relationship. I wish I had been able to read this book before getting married and maybe it would have helped. Getting divorced is a really hard decision to make and this book is a little dose of pragmatic reality, written from a lawyer's point of view - but also from somebody who has been through it. This is one of those books that I think should be required reading if you're thinking about getting married or divorced. I rarely review a book on Amazon, but this book really resonated to me. If you're thinking about divorce, read this book before going through with it and even if you decide to go ahead with it, you will have gained some valuable insight ahead of time and perhaps get through what is a painful process with as much grace and dignity as is possible.

This book is very helpful for those who are or have friends/family who are going through troubling times in their relationships. The author is very honest and to-the-point on the topics yet includes fun examples to give you better understanding. You can really tell that she understands the topic well and has creditability to her influence.

I have had a private practice for 35 years specializing in couples therapy. This type of work means I see many couples who are considering a divorce. I think Laura Wasser's book is the best I've seen, out of many. It is easy to read, extremely comprehensive , and written with a kind, gentle , and articulate prose.

My one criticism is the back cover with her posed sensually and provocatively. The book is too good to sell on sex appeal.
